Adopt a Pet for Better Health

Did you know owning a dog can make you happier and healthier? Over the years numerous studies have discovered significant physical and mental health benefits for pet owners, seniors included. The extra physical activity dog owners typically get in the form of walks and play is one of the more obvious ways your health gets a boost.

Research has shown that heart attack patients who were also dog owners lived longer than patients who didn't have a furry friend at home. Pet owners often experience these health perks too:

  • lower cholesterol
  • lower blood pressure
  • decreased triglyceride levels
  • fewer feelings of loneliness

June 2013
Perform a "Senior Safety Checkup" This Month
June is National Safety Month

Although it would be hard to come up with a comprehensive "senior safety checklist" given that everyone has their own unique set of health concerns and limitations, here are some of the top safety issues facing aging adults:

  • Hearing and Vision Loss: This affects everything from an elderly person's ability to drive a car to using common household appliances safely.
  • Falls: According to the CDC, one in three adults ages 65 and older fall each year. Falls are the most common cause of fractures and traumatic brain injuries in the elderly.
  • Driving: Health conditions in the elderly can make driving less safe, and slower reaction times can make accidents more likely.
  • Dementia and Other Chronic Health Problems: Cognitive changes in dementia patients require a watchful eye to ensure their surroundings are safe as the disease progresses. Mobility issues caused by arthritis and other conditions may necessitate strategic changes around the home to keep you or your loved one safe and independent.
  • Medications and Their Side Effects: Be aware of what medications you or your loved one are taking and any possible interactions or side effects that could impair you either physically or mentally.
Getting older doesn't mean you have to stop living in your home or doing the activities you enjoy, it just means you might have to make modifications to assist you or your loved one in doing things safely. Check our website later this month for more senior safety information!

Thought for the Day:

Shel Silverstein's "The Little Boy and The Old Man"

Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.
