We're part of Shelter Stars!
Shelter Stars, the Millan Foundation's animal shelter affiliation program, promotes positive, healthy relationships between families and the dogs they adopt from re-homing organizations across the country.
We're one of their newest members and through this program we are able to distribute copies of Cesar Millan's Mastering Leadership DVD series volume 3: Your New Dog & Beyond, free of charge to families that adopt a dog from us.
More than 1,000 DVDs were sent home with new adopting families in the first three months of the Shelter Stars program. Ask us for your voucher when you adopt from us!

Adoptable Pet of the Month:
Penny the dog

Penny is a 3 year old Boxer/Irish Terrier mix. She was an owner surrender to the shelter. She's a playful, sweet, and loving dog. She walks well on the leash, and is good with most other dogs. She likes to play fetch in the yard.
She's coming up on one year with us at the shelter and we don't understand why. Come spend some time with her to see if she's the right fit for you!
**As an update to the adoptable pet of May**
Puff the dog has been adopted!

Rescue Tails: Told by you!
Hi SCAR Family,
From the time I was old enough to walk, I've wanted a dog. In fact, I spent the first 18 years of my life begging for one, but my mother always said no. Eventually I graduated college, got a decent job, and moved out. The first thing I thought was, "now, now I can finally have a dog"! One day I met a man walking a dog wearing an "adopt me" vest. The man was a volunteer dog-walker for the Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR). Needless to say later that same day I was at the rescue walking a dog. For weeks I walked dogs at SCAR. In the beginning I walked only small dogs. Eventually, I worked up to the large dogs. One day I noticed a new face - a beautiful giant with a sad, droopy face. "Who's that?" I asked. "That's Wayne, you can walk him if you'd like." The moment I took the leash I knew I had finally found my dog.
On Thanksgiving Day, I got the call that Wayne's adoption was approved! I whispered to him, "Come on, Wayne, it's time to go home." His tail wagged wildly, he looked up, and licked my cheek. Like all rescuees, Wayne came with a little history. Sean explained that Wayne was extremely underweight when he was found roaming the streets of Brooklyn. Around his neck was a thick metal collar and a 6 foot long heavy metal chain. Sean guessed he was a junkyard dog. He was filthy and had sores on the bottom of his feet and all over his body. Regardless of all this Wayne came right over with his head down and his tail wagging when Sean called to him.
Bringing a 90 pound pit bull into our "cozy" apartment with my cat initially worried me. I wondered if he would be happy and if my cat, Conan, would be okay. But once we got home I knew everything would be okay. Wayne had no interest in Conan. He curled onto his fleece bed and reveled in the delicious new foods and treats we brought him, he beamed from the kisses and praise we bestowed up him, and happily pulled out the stuffing from his new toys.
Having a dog? Well, it's much, much better than I ever thought it could be. It has made me a calmer, happier, and more patient person. Thank you SCAR for helping me be brave enough to approach, rescue, and care for my beautiful 90 pound gentle boy! I'm proud to report that Wayne has passed his Canine Good Citizen Exam. I would also like to praise him for doing so well in our preparation for the Therapy Dog Exam and for being such a gentle giant with everyone he meets. Waynie, is an ambassador to his breed- did I mention he's a pit bull?
Love,
Kris Manzur
