Practice Sun Safety to Prevent Skin Cancer

With long, sunny summer days ahead of us, most people are daydreaming about the pool, the beach and barbeques, with little thought going to sun safety. That is unfortunate, considering rates of skin cancers have increased over 300 percent since 1994! The statistics surrounding skin cancer are scary: it is the most common form of cancer in the world, it has a high recurrence rate, and those diagnosed with skin cancer are twice as likely to develop another type of cancer.

Read our blog for helpful tips on how to protect yourself from skin cancer.

Did you know?
  • According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in men. Risk factors included being overweight, high blood pressure, diabetes, poor diet, and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Women are more likely to visit their physicians for annual checkups and preventative services than men (Heathday, 2001).
  • Women outlive men by an average of 5 years  (CDC, 2013).
  • Chronic stress can increase cancer risk and up your chances of getting a chronic disease, raise stroke and heart attack risk, and more (Huffington Post, 2013).
  • Men are more likely to commit suicide (AFSP, 2014).
So what's a man to do? If you've been putting off a visit to your doctor, make an appointment today. Routine physicals are a good place to start, and based on your family history, age and other risk factors your physician can let you know which preventative screenings you should schedule. Take steps to eat a little healthier, exercise a little more, and reduce stress. Commit to making small changes--they can translate into big results.
Hurricane Season is Here!

The first of June doesn't just signal the start of summer vacation and long days at the beach, it is also the start of hurricane season. So while you are planning your summer vacation, take the time to also put an emergency plan in place in case a hurricane or another natural disaster strikes. It's a good idea to have a basic supply kit including food, water and other essentials (click here for a full list of items) as well as a family emergency and evacuation plan. For more information on preparing for a hurricane, visit NOAA's National Hurricane website or Ready.gov.
