Artist Profile

Name:  Robin Paul

Web:  www.madhausgallery.com

Preferred Medium:  Anything GLASS...love it all from cold working to the hot molten stuff. I create stained glass sculpture, functional fused glass, cast glass art pieces and recently took glass blowing classes. My second love is painting and I enjoy mixed media work incorporating a variety of other mediums and disciplines.

What inspired you to make this career/avocation choice:

I worked in the insurance industry middle management for 27 years. My artistic work was always in second place until about five years ago when I had the opportunity to complete a three-year renovation and become a full time artist at our gallery in Winterset. My husband and I purchased the building with the intention of renovating it as our home and gallery/studio which allowed us to move out of a corporate life into purely artistic endeavors on a full time basis. We were able to do that in 2012.

What surprises you most about your work: My desire to learn everything and make bigger and bigger disasters! I'm only partially kidding. I have a natural curiosity about how everything is made and the processes involved. The more I learn, the more I see the technical similarities and how the application of good color and design disciplines are universal. Learning new techniques is invigorating and I love incorporating new things into my work.

How can people be more creative and artistic in their everyday life? Do something in your chosen craft every day... a sketch, throw a pot, melt some glass... whatever it is, just do it. Maybe it will be junk but it is practice and you don't learn anything if you aren't 'doing'. Every project doesn't have to be a masterpiece... make some messes and don't be afraid to try new things... In fact, take my advice and try everything!

LECTURE: MARY JANE JACOB

Des Moines Art Center
Sunday, June 7, 2015 1:30 pm

Since childhood, 85-year-old Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz
has felt the necessity to tell her story through her work, compelled too by
human amnesia that allows tragedy to be a way of life. Her meanings are
embodied in her matierals, and none is more revolutionary in her hands
than fiber-sensory, bodily, and real. This talk will trace the artist's life
through her art, and look at the world we share with her and
in which she asks us to care.
