1. Distinguished Honorary Degree Recipients
|
At the 43rd Meeting of the Board of Governors earlier this month the University of Haifa presented Doctor of Philosophy Degrees,
honoris causa, to, from left,
Noah Klieger (Israel), journalist, writer and Holocaust educator
; Shira Ruderman (Israel and USA), philanthropist;
Felix Posen (U.K.) philanthropist;
Prof. Robert Alter (USA), Hebrew language and literature scholar; and
Prof. Carol Padden (USA), sign language expert and human communication researcher. Also awarded Honorary Degrees were
Orna Porat (Israel), Actor and Grande Dame of the Israeli theater, and philanthropist
Jay Ruderman (USA).

2. Eye-Opening Northern Israel
Tour
Participants at this year's Board of Governors' Meeting toured northern Israel and received a first-hand view of conditions and the challenges at the
border with Lebanon from Prof. Arnon Soffer, right, Head of the Chaiklin Chair in Geostrategy.
Other tour stops included the Ma'agan Mikhael Ancient Ship Replica Project and the pioneering
Community Improvement Projects taking place in Acre. Read more.

3. 155 New PhDs
This year the University of Haifa awarded a record number of PhDs
--155 -- in a festive ceremony. The new PhDs, in more than 60 academic disciplines, joined the traditional academic procession led by the University administration and the Mayor of Haifa. The procession took to the streets of Haifa where citizens joined in the celebration.

4. Celebration for New Health Sciences Building
There was a festive Celebration of the Start of Construction of the
Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences Building, a 57,000 square foot free standing state-of-the-art structure, which, when completed in 2018, will be home to 10 departments and schools which make up the third largest Faculty at the University. "The essence of our activities is to make Israel a better place to live in" stated the Dean of the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences

5. Prestigious Prizes to Faculty Members
Prof. David Faraggi awarded three prestigious prizes to faculty members:
- The Dusty and Ettie Miller Fellowship for Outstanding Young Scholars to Dr. Sigal Zilcha-Mano from the Department of Psychology;
- The 2014/5 Rector's Award for Outstanding Lecturer to Dr. Omer Kimhi from the Faculty of Law; and
- The 2014/5 Rector's Award for Outstanding Researcher to Prof. Guy Bar-Oz, (pictured at right) the Head of the Department of Archaeology and the recipient of a prestigious ERC EU research grant.

At a private luncheon at the Union League with Jewish and non-Jewish business leaders, he was joined by, from left, Yaron Sideman, Consul General of Israel to the Mid-Atlantic Region, Edward Turzanski, Immediate Past President of the Union League of Philadelphia, and Co-Chair of the Center for the Study of Terrorism at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and Alan Luxenberg, President of the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

UH Researcher Discovers Japanese Medusa in the Mediterranean . . . and Explains What That Means
The Mediterranean Sea is changing. Proof is a new discovery made at the University of Haifa's Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa - a transparent, phosphorescent jellyfish,
spotted mostly in Japan, that has migrated to the shores of Israel, probably via ballast water of merchant ships. Dr. Gur Mizrahi, above, who found the species of medusa during a routine
survey, sums up the situation - "The concern is that changes to the marine environment will allow other jellyfish, dangerous to humans, to migrate to this area and cause significant and dramatic harm."

About 50% of Israeli's Willing to Have the State Monitor Their Online Activities
About half of Israel's citizens are willing to have the state monito
ring their online activities, if it would help to boost national security, accordin
g to a
study conducted at the School of Political Sciences at the University of Haifa. The new study conducted shortly after threats were made by the network of hackers calling itself Anonymous to wage an "electronic holocaust" against Israel.
