Summer Sun Safety: Preventing Skin Cancer

If you were like many Americans, you probably headed outdoors over Memorial Weekend. The most popular holiday weekend activities-boating, heading to the beach and barbecuing-could have left you with more than you bargained for if you got sunburned. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., and rates of melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, are on the rise. May was Skin Cancer Awareness Month and the timing couldn't be better as we head into the sun-filled days of summer. Visit our blog for tips on preventing and identifying skin cancer.

Gardening Corner

Ever wonder how much water your garden needs and how frequently to water? Both not enough water and over watering can cause problems, and watering needs vary based on soil type and the types of veggies you are growing.
According to Burpee.com, most vegetables need about an inch of water (six gallons per square yard) weekly for optimum growth. Shallow watering causes roots to remain close to the surface and makes them weaker, so if watering by hand aim to soak the soil occasionally to encourage deeper root growth.

June 2015
June is National Safety Month

According to Healthfinder.gov, injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages and the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. Just being more aware of common injuries and their causes may help you or a loved one side step a problem. June is National Safety Month, and we encourage you to learn more about the following common safety concerns:

  • Prescription painkiller abuse: Prescription painkiller overdoses are a growing problem in the United States, especially among women. About 18 women die every day from a prescription painkiller overdose - more than 4 times as many as back in 1999.
  • Transportation safety: Doing other activities while driving - like texting or eating - distracts you and increases your chance of crashing. Almost 1 in 5 crashes (17%) that injured someone involved distracted driving.
  • Slips, trips, and falls: One in 3 older adults falls each year. Many falls lead to broken bones and other health problems.
Share this information with your friends and loved ones! Visit the National Safety Council's website for more safety information and tips for preventing injuries.
Senior Safety & Fall Prevention
elder-men-portrait.jpg
There is a reason you read so much about fall prevention for seniors; according to the National Safety Council's report Injury Facts 2015, falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in those ages 65+. Even when falls are not fatal, they can have severe repercussions, including hospitalization, brain injury, and surgery. Falls can cause seniors to be fearful of getting around and lead to unnecessary mobility restriction. An active lifestyle is key to staying healthy and preventing falls, and seniors should look at incorporating exercises like yoga and tai chi into their daily life to improve balance and coordination. The National Safety Council has a great list of tips on how to fall-proof your home.
