National Conference on Afterschool & Summer

The National Summer Learning Association joins School's Out Washington to present, Dare to Disrupt! The Pathway to Excellence and Equity in Education, October 24-26 in Seattle, Washington. This three-day national convening will bring together the nation's top thinkers to share and discuss the partnerships, policies and programs that are breaking down traditional notions of when and where learning occurs. Registration rates go up July 1st.

OregonASK was honored to host the National STEM Systems Institute in Portland this May in partnership with STEM Next and the Mott Foundation. We brought together education and business leaders, the philanthropic community, out of school time program partners, and policy makers around the theme of Cultivating the STEM Continuum, sharing ideas around connecting STEM systems building, expanded learning opportunities, and workforce.

Many thanks to our all those who attended and our amazing event sponsors who made it all possible!

Excellence in Expanded Learning Award
Congratulations Terri Fackrell!

Terri most recently served as the Community Recreation Department Manager for Willamalane Park and Recreation District in Springfield, OR. Terri has almost 20 years of experience working with Park and Recreation departments around Oregon, serving at Willamalane since 2008.

Terri is not only dedicated to helping engage youth and families in her community through the great outdoors, she has also been a long time partner of OregonASK Expanded Learning Partnership. Terri has represented the Oregon Recreation and Parks Association on the Partner committee for 10 years!! We know it is easy to get caught up in the continuous 'fires' that arise from everyday programming, but we would like to recognize Terri for her commitment to the Network and the field of afterschool as a whole - Thank You Terri!
Summer Learning Legislative Work Group

Last month, Representative Smith Warner pulled together a legislative work group under the House Education Committee auspices to address the issue of Summer Learning in Oregon. The group is tasked with establishing an agreed-upon range of classifications to describe summer learning programs, to define the classifications and then to categorize the programs we identify through a statewide summer learning survey. We have met twice and look forward to continuing this work as we help educate policymakers and stakeholders alike to the needs of Oregon youth and families.
Save the Date- October 22nd, 2016

Join us in Salem on October 22nd for another jam-packed day of fun, informative, hands-on training focused on equipping you and your youth for a bright future!
Wellness & Nutrition Survey

OregonASK is conducting a survey of wellness and nutrition practices in out-of-school time across the state.  Currently, there is no comprehensive database of this information, which makes it difficult to assess what practices are best and what resources are most needed. With this survey, we hope to collect information to better support wellness in out-of-school-time. Data from this survey will be used to create a report that will be shared with lawmakers in order to promote legislation and funding to support out-of-school wellness practices.

Please Click Here to complete the survey if you are a program manager, or share it with the programs in your network if you are not! Participants will receive a $5 gift card in thanks for their time.
Student Success: Out of School Time Grant

Oregon Community Foundation has released a grant opportunity for out of school time programs (afterschool and summer) that serve middle school students of color, rural students and/or low-income students to participate in a Learning Community and receive related program funding. The Learning Community will be focused on program quality improvement and evaluation capacity building.  The deadline to apply is August 1, 2016. You can visit the OCF website for additional background and application materials.
