City Newsletter - June 2017
It's hard to believe that it's June! It's so beautiful to see all the trees with their leaves and flowers blooming. Don't forget to join us all summer long for our fifth year of free concerts in the park.
Moving forward this fall, the City will be expanding Pumpkin Bash. We hope you will join us for the first Walker Community Relay for Life event on October 7, from 3:00 - 9:00 p.m. immediately following Pumpkin Bash.
We will be using the walking paths behind city hall to accommodate music, vendors and all things in support of the fight against cancer!
Cancer affects all of us, we all seem to know a relative, a co-worker or a friend who has been affected by the disease. Cancer research has made survival possible for some. The American Cancer Society funds research right in our own community at places like the Van Andel Institute and Spectrum Health.
Although it seems like a long way off, it's not too early to think about how you can get involved!
If you're not familiar with Relay for Life, there are several ways you can participate:
- Form a team to participate in the event - The team can be comprised of two or more people.
- Sign up as a survivor - Relay for Life is all about celebrating survivors in our community. Register as a survivor or caregiver and celebrate at the Relay.
- Become a Sponsor - If you own a business, this is a great way to give back to our community. Relay offers a variety of sponsorship levels and opportunities.
- Donate - Donate a gift card, gift basket, or any other item for our silent auction.
To learn more, visit the Relay For Life website at relayforlife.org/walkercommunitymi. If you have questions, please contact Kelli Ellis from the American Cancer Society at

July 4th Celebration Safety Tips
The City of Walker Fire Department urges you to use caution when using fireworks as part of your Fourth of July celebration.
Public Act 256 of the State of Michigan allows for the use of consumer fireworks. Use of fireworks in Walker is regulated by Section 38-16 of the City Ordinance.
Some of the highlights of the state law and city ordinance are as follows:
- The use of fireworks is allowed on the day before, the day of, and the day after each national holiday.
- Fireworks cannot be set off after 1:00 a.m.
- You must be 18 years or older to purchase consumer fireworks.
- Use of consumer fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances is illegal.
- Setting off fireworks on public property, in the street, school property, church property, or any other person's property without permission is prohibited.
Please be aware of your neighbors and the affect that your fireworks use has on them. Especially be respectful of Military Veterans in your area. The Walker Fire Department would prefer that you leave fireworks displays to the professionals and simply enjoy from a distance but if you choose to set off fireworks as part of your celebration please use extreme caution.
