President's Letter
James E. Martin

Dear Members:

This is a bittersweet article I write as it represents my last Competitive Edge contribution as your president.  I cannot believe how quickly one year can pass.  So much has happened during my term and I am grateful for the experience.

I am grateful to the volunteers who served as board members alongside me this past year.  Each of them made a contribution to the workings of our affiliate and helped ensure we deliver the kind of programming you expect as a member.

I had hoped to stem the decline in membership this year but regrettably that has not happened.  I am still learning about headcount reductions at our membership organizations which impact a member's decision to renew.  As tough as it may seem, I cannot stress the importance of maintaining your membership in ISM-New York.  Having experienced job loss myself, membership helped me stay in contact with peers and learn about opportunities.  No matter how tough times get it is important to keep your membership.

The future of our affiliate is looking positive.  More companies are relying on their supply chain executives for cost savings, process improvement and bottom line contributions.  As we look to the future, there will be opportunities for new members to join, current members to expand their knowledge through our Professional Development courses and meetings, and the flexibility to evolve as the business world changes.

The incoming board is one of the best in years with some dedicated members prepared to make an immediate impact to our affiliate.  I am proud to have served as president, as a board member and active volunteer of ISM-New York for the past 12 years.  I thank you all for the opportunity to have served as your president and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting.

Director's Letter
Stacy Ferrara, Treasurer
 Dear Members:

The weather has finally warmed and we can't help but have our thoughts turn to summer vacations with time away from the office. We here at ISM-New York have already been hard at work preparing for a great    2017-2018. You can look forward to more dynamic speakers, valuable new Professional Development classes and of course continued networking with old and new friends.

Over the next few weeks you'll be receiving your notice to renew your ISM-New York membership. I hope you'll take the time to quickly get that done and ensure you don't miss any of the opportunities we're  planning for you. Those relaxing months tend to fly by before we know it.

The close of this year is bittersweet for me as I end my service to the ISM-New York Board of Directors after five years. It's been an honor and privilege to serve such an esteemed organization. My involvement allowed me to work with and meet many wonderful people. You will still see me regularly at member meetings and you're in wonderful hands with the in-coming board.

 Have a wonderful summer!
 Thank you,
 Quarterly Focus on Supplier Diversity
    Shendora Pridgen, Executive Director
           Morgan Stanley, Firmwide Sourcing

Shendora Pridgen Is No Stranger To Supplier Diversity

Currently the Executive Director and Global Head of Supplier Diversity, Shendora's career started as an Analyst in the Sourcing Department at Morgan Stanley in 1997. She has been involved with the Supplier Diversity program since it was started in 1998, first serving as a Sourcing liaison for over 10 years and then taking over the program in 2011. When asked about her position, Shendora states, "It has been an amazing journey. I love networking with people internally and externally. I like helping others and in this role I feel that I'm able to do so by being a strong advocate for diverse businesses."

One of the initiatives Shendora started in 2012 was having internal events, partnering with various groups within the   Firm and including some external certification affiliates. This allows Morgan Stanley the opportunity to invite diverse suppliers to meet the Sourcing group and obtain an understanding of their   Procurement process. Diverse-owned companies are able to connect with the right people and hear valuable information about how Morgan Stanley seeks new suppliers.

Shendora gives the following recommendations to a Procurement team looking to develop a new Supplier Diversity program: "It takes time to develop a good program, and you can't do it alone. You need the help of external partners (local and national affiliates) to assist you with finding qualified diverse suppliers. Secondly, you need to work closely with your Procurement team, making sure they are fully aware of the program and obtain their buy-in upfront to provide opportunities to diverse businesses when reviewing the market. I also find developing annual spend targets is helpful to keep the program progressing."
