Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month

The Alzheimer's Association "Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month" is June. It's a time to shine a purple light for the millions of individuals world-wide and all the family members and caregivers locally affected by Alzheimer's disease. We need your help to honor those struggling with this disease every day by mobilizing friends, families, neighbors, co-workers and customers to help bring an end to Alzheimer's disease. The time is now to commit to going purple during Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month (ABAM). The end of Alzheimer's starts now. The End of Alzheimer's Starts with YOU.

The Great Give 2017

As you probably know, the Alzheimer's Care Resource Center  participated in the Great Give Palm Beach & Martin Counties, a 24-hour online giving event. Great Give 2017 is designed to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits in just one day! Last year, thanks to generous donors like you, we raised about $700! This year, we are proud to let you know that we raised over $1,000!

We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who helped us reach this goal! Your donation will go a long way in helping us  provide coaching, counseling and supportive services for family caregivers who otherwise cannot afford it

Thank you so much for all the donations we received!
What to Buy for Father's Day When Dad Has Dementia
What could be better than getting a present on a special day? Mother's day or Father's day: These and many more occasions offer an excuse or a reason to give a gift to that loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia.

We recommend that you consider two important things when selecting a gift for a person with Alzheimer's disease. Choose something that will make things easier for him, things that will help maintain a degree of independence. The collective name for this type of product is  Aids for Daily Living. This could be a product that helps her to remember to take his medicine or to accomplish an everyday task that the progression of the disease is making more difficult. It could be an item that helps him locate something when he forgets where he used it last.

Another important consideration: find something that is fun, something that he will really enjoy.  Best Alzheimer's Products have spent countless hours finding activities that are delightful at the same time that they are engaging and stimulating. That could be sensory stimulation, cognitive stimulation, or physical stimulation. If an activity stimulates it will probably be fun.

It is also important to consider the stage he or she is in when selecting a present for a person with Alzheimer's. In the earliest stages, gifts need not be different than what you might have given her before the diagnosis. Games and activities should reflect her interests and challenge her to exercise her brain as well as her body. As the condition progresses activities should be less challenging, but should still reflect her interests and keep her involved. Later stage gifts should concentrate on providing comfort while stimulating the senses.

Happy Father's Day!

Hurricane Season 2017
It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Tropical cyclones and hurricanes are among nature's most powerful and destructive phenomena. If you live in an area prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, like south Florida then you need to be prepared. Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by dangerous flooding, destructive winds and tornadoes from these storms. The National Hurricane Center issues watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather.

The Time to Prepare is NOW!
What should you do to prepare for a hurricane?

Get a plan. The most important step is to identify your hurricane risk. Do you live in an evacuation zone? If so, you need to plan on where you and your family would ride out the storm if you are told to evacuate. Most people only need to evacuate a few miles from the coast to avoid the dangers of storm surge. Find a friend or relative that lives outside the storm surge evacuation zone and have a plan to ride out the storm with them. You should also establish a family communications plan in case you are not together when you need to evacuate.

Once a person understands their risk for hurricane impacts, an appropriate disaster safety plan should be developed to help ensure an individual's and a family's safety. A disaster safety plan is a comprehensive plan that identifies all of the steps a family needs to take before, during, and after a disaster to ensure maximum personal safety and property protection. For a step-by-step guide on creating a family disaster plan please see  Florida's Get a Plan guide.

Hurricane season begins June 1st and ends on November 30th.
Overcoming Battles in the Bathroom
Hello and welcome. Most family caregivers already know that it's not uncommon for a loved one with dementia to refuse to shower or bathe. Finding a way to encourage them will take some trial and error. The following tips will help you to overcome bathing battles and help keep your loved one's hygiene in check.
  1. 1. Find ways to simplify the routine
Make sure all your necessary items are already set out. For example, shampoo, soap, towels and clean clothes. If your loved one uses a shower chair then make sure it is secure and ready for use.  Additional things to think about to make the experience as pleasant as possible for your loved one include:
  • Is the temperature of the room too cold for my loved one?
  • Is the water too hot or cold for my loved one?
  • Are there throw rugs or bath mats I can remove for safety purposes?
  • Is this a relaxing environment?

Your  iPod donation will go to a person with Alzheimer's disease or dementia to help improve their quality of life. Personalized music on an iPod revitalizes a person and restores a deep sense of self to those suffering from Alzheimer's. Please help us make a difference in the life of a loved one!
