Stronger YouTube Kids parental controls
Last year, we published an ACPeds
Parent Talk
on
children being exposed to inappropriate videos when using YouTube Kids
after a New York Times
article
discussed parents complaining of videos with well-known children's characters "in violent or lewd situations".
Thankfully, it seems that
YouTube Kids has made efforts to clean up their act
. Google has launched a new slew of YouTube Kids parental controls and these
new features control not only the main content displayed within the app, but also the recommended videos that appear after viewing a video
.

Ultra sterile enviornments may contribute to leukemia, study suggests
A landmark
study
suggests that
sterile environments of our ultra-hygienic modern age could be major drivers of leukemia.
|
|
On the contrary, the study identified the following as major protectors against leukemia:
- natural childbirths instead of elective caesarean-sections,
- breastfeeding,
- avoiding antibiotics at a very young age,
- plenty of exposure to other kids, and
- playing in the dirt.
|
|
|
Upon what are these conclusions based? Well according to Professor Mel Greaves, one of the most respected names in the cancer biology world,
“if a child is exposed to common bacteria or viruses very early in life, ones that may not even initiate any disease, through breast feeding, contact with other children, their own microbiome, the soil or other aspects of a perfectly natural environment, the immune system becomes primed and can resist the development of the cancer
.” For more information,

PCPs may need more training on suicide, research suggests
According to recent
research
, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for youth aged 15-24 years and it takes the lives of more teenagers and young adults than cancer, heart disease, diabetes, congenital birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease combined.
Because primary care providers (PCPs) often receive limited training in treating mental health disorders and most emergency departments aren’t set up to provide acceptable care to patients with suicidal thoughts either,
medical experts
are now emphasizing that PCPs “need to know who to screen, when to screen, and how to screen" for suicide in the primary care setting.
|
|
Experts say that paying attention to language is especially important and it's the easiest way to assess the severity of a patient’s suicide ideations because the more detail a patient provides about their suicidal thoughts and intent, the greater the severity of suicidal risk.
In sum, when children indicate they may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, health professionals, parents, and educators should emphasize that suicide is never the right option, that it negatively affects the people left behind and that there is help available to those who need it.

Poor sleep leads to permissive parenting, research shows
According to recent
research
, parents (specifically
mothers) “who don’t get enough sleep or who take longer falling asleep have a greater tendency to engage in permissive parenting—parenting marked by lax or inconsistent discipline
.”
It’s clear that permissive parenting leads to adolescent risky behavior because
permissive parents do not consistently enforce basic rules for conduct and they fail to provide adequate structure and stability to children’s lives
.
|
|
On the other hand, parenting in which parents monitor children’s activities, know their whereabouts, and require appropriate and mature behavior within the child’s range of ability, also known as
authoritative parenting, is the optimal style of parenting that results in the best outcomes for child and teen health
.
