Letter from the President

Nicholas Unkovic
BABC President & Partner, Squire Patton Boggs

Dear Friends of the BABC,
We are coming to the end of my fourth and last year as President of the BABC of Northern California, so this will be my final monthly letter to you.

Over the last four years, our BABC has grown in membership and improved our programming quality and networking opportunities. Our members regularly benefit from business opportunities sourced through the BABC. We have continued to support our local community through superb charities like Rafael House and Play Rugby USA. And did I mention that we throw the best Christmas party in Northern California?
I am proud to have played a part in the ongoing success of our wonderful organization and extend my thanks to everyone who has been involved with the BABC during my tenure, especially our superb Executive Director Jo Healey, my fellow directors, and all of our staff and volunteers for their support of the BABC.
May has once again been a busy month for us.
On May 2nd the BABC, along with the FACC and GABA, again held our Spring European Networking evening in Palo Alto at the spectacular offices of BABC Patron Member Cooley LLP. More than 100 members and guests attended the event from a wide array of European and global nations. Many thanks to our Sponsors Cooley and Rugby World Cup Sevens. Check out the photos from the event here
We have also been hard at work preparing for some big events coming up in June. On the 25th we have the hotly anticipated BABC Young Professionals Great British-American Pub Quiz. This year teams will once again compete for the coveted Pub Quiz trophy and some great prizes; keep an eye out for an announcement of the prizes shortly.
We will host our 62nd Annual General Meeting on the 27th of June. All BABC members are invited to join us to vote in the 2018-2019 Board of Directors, reflect on the activities of the BABC Northern California over the past year and mix and mingle with your fellow members.
We will also of course be hosting our ever-popular Young Professionals Happy Hour at Cafe Americano. We will be making a big announcement at the event, so be sure to come along and join us for another fun evening.
Finally yet importantly, as you will see from our new and renewing member sections further down in this newsletter, the BABC community remains as strong and vibrant as ever. I hope you will join me in welcoming the newest members of our growing and dynamic community - you will find information about them below. Please take a moment to visit their websites and contact Jo Healey if you would like to learn more.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Sponsors play an important role in the development and growth of the British American Business Council (BABC). BABC sponsors benefit from an increased visibility within and beyond the BABC community and are able to cultivate important business relationships. Their support helps BABC offer a wide range of events and services.

From The Consul General's Desk

Dear Friends and Members of the BABC,

While we are in the midst of a very busy period at the Consulate - including visits by the Chancellor , and a Royal Wedding - this month we had the pleasure of welcoming 15 incredibly talented women CEOs to Silicon Valley for our fourth Female Founders Mission.
The mission aims to build new opportunities for these established businesses and foster relationships, inspiring the next generation of female founders and promoting diversity in the work place. Our Female Founders and their businesses are competitively selected for their innovation, their business to date as well as their ability to scale. The success of the visit is a reflection of the hard work put in by the Mayor of London's International Business programme, the organisers behind Silicon Valley Comes to the UK, and our Department for International Trade team- an invaluable partnership.
This incredible group featured businesses in a variety of areas from mental health and home care providers to AI and VR, among many others.
This mission gives women the chance to gain invaluable insights from some very successful companies, and in turn show just how influential woman are in any given field. While Silicon Valley is the center of innovation, it is not without its problems particularly as it relates to general equality. Many strides have been made in the past year. But I want to point out that gender equality is also a priority for the whole of the British government and is central to FCO's human rights work worldwide. We have contributed to the substantial progress which has been made in securing greater participation of women - particularly in conflict-affected areas - and in tackling sexual violence in conflict.  Nevertheless, womenremain underrepresented at most levels of government and in other formal decision making processes in very many parts of the world.
That's why we will continue to do what we can to support women in the tech sector, and promote the value of diversity in all its forms. Having the chance to welcome and host this group of Female Founders is always an incredible experience, I can't wait to see what they do.
Andrew Whittaker,
HM Consul General

BAB Publishes Statement on Heathrow Airport Expansion

On 5 June 2018, Heathrow Airport received approval from the UK Government for the construction of a third runway at its airport in Longford, England, outlined in the latest Airports National Policy statement tabled today by Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP. The proposed £14bn private investment is projected to create approximately 60,000 new jobs and double Heathrow's cargo capacity, generating up to £74bn in economic benefits.
BAB welcomes the UK Government's support of Heathrow's case for a third runway, through which it can maintain its position as the UK's only Hub airport and the largest port by value to markets outside the EU and Switzerland. The UK's airports are critical in maintaining our connection with the world, both for business and tourism.
BAB has long been a vocal supporter of Heathrow's case for expansion, outlining in its 2018 Policy Agenda its necessity as part of the UK Government's Industrial Strategy as a driver for growth. Heathrow plays an essential role in the success and future of the UK-US economic relationship, which is worth over a trillion dollars in Foreign Director Investment (FDI) and over £160 billion in trade annually. Every month thousands of travellers from North America land in Heathrow. 87% of American business visitors repeatedly travel to the UK bringing substantial business with them.

Duncan Edwards, CEO, BritishAmerican Business said:
"Heathrow's expansion comes at a critical juncture in Britain's future. As the UK negotiates its future relationship with the European Union, and begins to redefine its position on the world stage, the approval of these plans deliver the message that Britain is open for business. We are delighted to that the Government, too, sees the value in Heathrow's expansion and echo the Secretary of State for Transport's vision "to build a Britain that is fit for the future."
BAB hopes that the UK's MPs will look to these plans with the same ambition and optimism that we do, and approve the National Policy Statement in a timely manner to ensure Britain, and the world, isn't kept waiting."

The publication was launched in Birmingham at the Annual BABC Transatlantic Conference, bringing together over 250 business leaders and government representatives from both sides of the Atlantic.
'Finding Your Way' was produced by BritishAmerican Business on behalf of BABC in order to provide UK companies looking to either trade with, or invest in the US with a comprehensive and straightforward guide to ensure they do so with the best knowledge possible. The publication offers expert advice from our partner companies, answers to frequently asked questions, and links to useful resources to help these companies on their transatlantic journey.

The guide also features showcases on select states in the US and the unique, business-friendly environments they have created.
BAB is delighted to have received the endorsement of both the UK Department for International Trade (DIT) and SelectUSA for this publication.
Duncan Edwards, CEO, BritishAmerican Business and CEO, British-American Business Council said:
"Britain's small and medium-sized enterprises are the lifeblood of the economy, accounting for 99.9% of all private sector businesses in the UK. Of these companies, approximately 25% export their goods and services across the globe, over half of whom export to the US market.
These numbers illustrate the value and importance so many of Britain's small and medium sized enterprises identify in the transatlantic trade and investment relationship as a source of growth and success for their business. Our chief goal at BABC is to nurture this relationship further, and help businesses of all sizes share their world-class products with our friends and colleagues in the US.
We hope this publication will act as a first port of call for any business looking to take their business overseas, and encourage them to play an active role in maintaining the transatlantic economic relationship as the most valuable on earth."
