Traveling Mercies

Sermon Series...Traveling Mercies
Summer is here, travel season is on! 'Tis the season to leave home and find life in unfamiliar places and people. Using the lens of scriptural characters' experiences of leaving home, this series explores ideas of going outside ourselves, outside our normal patterns, and seeing what there is to teach us. Sometimes we leave and find that there are things from home that no longer serve us.  Sometimes the time away gives us renewed perspective and helps us to reevaluate life. Both physically and spiritually, it's good to leave the comfortable and commonplace to experience God anew.

Sermon Title: " Traveling Mercies"
Scripture:   Galatians 1:13-24
Rev. Katie Meek will preach at the 8:30 and 11 am worship services and Rev. Dr. Beverly Jones will preach at the 9:40 service this Sunday.  The Source , our weekly devotional guide, is available on the church website .
Please join us in worship this Sunday at  8:30 am (Sanctuary), 9:40 am (FLC), or 11 am (Sanctuary).
It's time to update your family portrait!
We are producing a new pictorial directory this year and we want you to be in it!
Time flies! It has been three years since we published our last church pictorial directory. During that time 540 individuals and families have joined First Church. It is time for a new directory!

Each family or individual is invited to come and have a professional portrait made here at church. You will receive a complimentary 8" x 10" color portrait and a free copy of the directory. You will have an opportunity to purchase additional portraits but there is absolutely no obligation to do so. You can plan your photo to reflect your family's interests. Choose your colors, bring the family dog, musical instrument...anything that you think best represents your family.

August and September Photography sessions are open
Photographers will be here on the following dates: August 2 - 6 and September 13 - 17. We hope that the August dates will make it easy to include your college students in your family photo. Our goal is to have 550 families included in this directory so sign up now to reserve your space. New this year: We will have Sunday photo sessions available. We expect those to go quickly so don't wait to sign up online.

Sign up is easy. Online sign up is available on the church website, http://fumc-rr.org/directory/. When you sign up online, you will receive a $10 coupon for additional portraits with your confirmation e-mail. We will also have people available before and after worship services for six Sundays, beginning Sunday, June 25, to assist you with the online sign up. Look for us in the Sanctuary foyer and both entrances to the Family Life Center.

Expect a call. If you haven't already, you will be receiving one phone call from Will Cotton inviting you to sign up for your portrait session. Those calls will be made next week. After you sign up you will receive a confirmation e-mail and one reminder phone call a couple of days before your appointment.

Sunday Shuttle
The United Methodist Men (UMM) are multi-talented
Sometimes they cook. Sometimes they fish. Taking a cue from Uber, they are now providing rides.  Does that make them UMMer drivers? They are  offering non-stop trips to and from the north and south parking lots to the main sanctuary, FLC and Adkins Education building from  9:15 am - 12:15 pm  each Sunday. Come catch a ride with one of the UMMers during these hot summer months!

Summer Choir
Summer Choir!
Have you ever been interested in singing from the loft with the choir during worship service? Summer Choir is an opportunity for people to experience leading worship in a relaxed environment.  During the summer, the choir does not wear robes, and does not have Wednesday night rehearsals. All you have to do is show up in the South Suite at 10:30 am, rehearse the service music for the day, and then lead worship together at the 11 am service.

The dates for Summer Choir are July 9, 16, 23, and 30The choir is full of wonderful people, who share a passion for sharing God's love through music. We hope you will join us!
Children's Ministry
VBS 2017
We are made by God and built for a purpose!
Children's Ministries is celebrating two successful weeks of Maker Fun Factory Vacation Bible School, held June 12-16 and June 19-23. We had participants of all ages and it was exciting to see the wide span of generations from preschoolers to grandparents. Almost 400 children, 102 youth helpers and 135 adult volunteers learned that we are made by God and built for a purpose. Each day began and ended with worship in the sanctuary. Participants of all ages enjoyed the music, skits and dancing. Five stations reinforced the Bible points for the day: God made you, God is for you, God is always with you, God will always love you and God made you for a reason.

VBS Missions were Operation Kid to Kid and the Round Rock Area Serving Center. In the two weeks of VBS, children contributed money that will be used to purchase clean water for children in Peru.  In the first week, $1000 dollars were collected, which is enough to buy clean water for 200 children for one year!  Over 1200 of pounds of nonperishable goods were brought by children to donate to the Round Rock Area Serving Center. The food pantry gets bare during the summer months, so they were so grateful for our donations!

Fifth graders focused on a different mission each day. Missions included making dog biscuits for WILCO and placemats for Drive a Senior. Fifth graders also had the opportunity to go serve at the Ronald McDonald House in Austin and Texas Baptist Children's Home, where they made lunch for the families staying there. They visited Wyoming Springs Assisted Living and Hearthstone Senior Center, where they spent time doing different activities with residents. Finally, the fifth graders visited the Round Rock Area Serving Center where they toured the facility and stocked the food pantry with lots of non-perishable food items brought by VBS participants.
We are grateful for the opportunity to reach so many children and families!  WOW, God!

Safety First!
Let's be courteous, safe and legal on the First Church campus!
We have a beautiful church campus, and on most days there are many people driving in and out, and parking for various programs and events. Sometimes we need to be reminded of a few guidelines:
  • Drive slowly through the church's campus.
  • Be observant of pedestrians, especially young children and other vehicles.
  • Use caution backing out of parking spaces and entering cross sections.
  • Avoid leaving children unattended in a vehicle even for just a brief period.
  • Lock your vehicle and store valuables out of sight (or leave them at home).
  • Don't in fire lanes or block access to fire hydrants...it is unsafe and illegal!
  • Don't park in designated handicapped parking spaces without appropriate tags or licenses...even if you are just running in for a minute.
Thank you!
