Dinosaurs !
Nothing captures our imagination like dinosaurs both the public and most especially our kids. They are full of fun and amazement.
There is great novelty, adventure and stimulus of our imagination associated with dinosaurs. But in all the excitement and possible threat of personal horror we can be sure we are ultimately safe because dinosaurs are no more.
However, there is another side to the way dinosaurs are often presented. It is as if the past existence of dinosaurs immediately proves evolution and makes a laughing stock of Biblical Creationism. One can be sure that this is the atmosphere commonly presented in schools and even some churches as well. After all no one wants to be accused of being
scientifically illiterate! Or possibly worse, anti-science! Who could be so stupid that they could use smartphones, computers, multimedia entertainment systems, or drive modern cars or even fly in jet airliners and not understand that science has it right?
One can well understand how such an emotional line of feeling leads to that kind of thinking. However, there are as many misconceptions involved in that line of feeling and thinking as there are true facts.
In the June 8 GHCA meeting we will look at the actual evidence associated with dinosaurs and separate the science from the emotion, fantasy and imagination. The science facts actually fits amazingly well with a Biblical framework of a young supernatural creation followed by a catastrophically destructive worldwide flood that reworked much of Earth's geology and gave mankind and much other life a new start.
What about all that modern science and technology? All of that wonderful technology is the product of doing repeatable observations and repeatable experimental testing in the laboratory using the scientific method. That is called empirical science and that generates all the laws of physics and chemistry and all modern technology.
When it comes to dinosaurs and other things from the distant past we can't make any direct observations of events in the distant past. Nor can we generally repeat what happened in the past or experiment on those past events. We can only collect as many data points as we can and try to connect those points the best way we can see. That process is called historical science and it forces us to use a lot more assumptions and guesswork than empirical science does. This is a very important issue! You might want to read our article titled Two Kinds of Science at our website articles page here
.
As more and more fossils and other data have been collected many amazing patterns have come to light. Many dinosaurs are found in "bone beds" with unexpected conglomerations of other fossils.
In recent years, more and more dinosaur bones are being found with some original tissue still present. No one can explain how these soft tissue components might last even a few years not to mention more than 65 million years! Even more, radiocarbon C-14 is being found in dinosaur bones indicating they are only thousands of years old, not millions. And there is very much more unexpected data.
At the June 8 GHCA meeting we will review some of these issues and call on excerpts from the DVD series Uncovering the Truth About Dinosaurs from the ICR. The ICR research scientists provide a high level of keen insight because they have PhDs from secular universities,
have years of research experience in secular institutions, while they have amassed expert knowledge in the creationary view as well. Along the way, we stop and discuss some the main points. We will also take questions and provide more discussion that will enable all to become confident of their knowledge. In the end, all will be able to use this great DVD set to confidently inform students, family, friends, and even your pastors as well.
