1 - Thank you, Coach Fritz!
Congratulations and thank you to Coach Jeff Fritz for being part of the Churchill Family for 25 years! In early May, the boys lacrosse team and parents honored Coach Fritz for his career in coaching over 400 student athletes and building Churchill Lacrosse into one of the top programs in the state. Read all about Coach Fritz and his accomplishments here . Thank you, Coach !
2 - Spring Sports News
Co-Ed Volleyball Wins Championship!
The Co-ed team headed to County Championships against rival Sherwood. WCHS had lost 3-0 earlier in the season but showed up at the championship to avenge the loss. We won the first set, 25-15, took a hit in the second with a score of 18-25, but bounced back in the third to win that one 27-25. With a 2-1 lead, WCHS entered the 4th set and fell behind by as many as 8 points. But we didn't want to play a 4th game so the Dawgs battled back to win the set and the game, becoming the 2018 MCPS County Champs! Go Churchill!
Boys' Volleyball Goes to County Championship
In the Boys final, the team faced a WJ team that had only lost 1 set all season. That didn’t deter our boys as they came out full of energy and took it to WJ in the first set. In the next set, WJ came out strong and from there they didn’t look back, winning the next 3 to win the match. Despite the outcome it was an extremely impressive performance by our Bulldogs. They fought from start to finish and it was an impressive sight.
WCHS All-County Players:
Senior Erik Hillard - 1st Team Setter/Opposite
Junior Justin Jin - 1st Team Outside Hitter
Senior Richard Tan - 2nd Team Outside Hitter
Congratulations, Gentlemen!
Track Stars Impress at Regionals
Congrats to all of our athletes on a great season, we had some outstanding performances at Regionals: Two of our seniors had career days, Brendan Tan-Fahed had a huge triple jump (over 45 feet) to not only place 2nd and qualify for States, but to also qualify for nationals; McKenzie Fagan saved her best 100m hurdles for her last race and placed 6th overall in the region. Our other State qualifier was Will Chan who came in 3rd in the 400m. Other outstanding performances included Gabe Moore, who placed 5th in the 100m, Freshmen Alex Primich, 7th,   and Maddie Vinal,  9th, in the 3200, Mike Z placed 9th in the 800m. Jumpers Jimena Moreno and Flora Navares placed in both the long and triple jumps (Jimena, 8th and 9th; Flora, 9th and 8th).  Anjali Iyer missed States by just over a second in the 800m while setting a new PR in 2:22 (6th all-time for Churchill).
Congratulations to Brendan Tan-Fahed , Churchill's only National's qualifier, shown here with Coach Aaron Gadsen. Brendon is competing in the triple jump in the national championship in North Carolina on June 15. Good luck, Brendan !
Boys Lacrosse made it to States
The Boys Lacrosse team and Coach Fritz had an amazing season. They won the region title for the 6th time in 7 years, went undefeated in the regular season for the first time, and made their 3rd appearance in the state finals in the last 4 years. At the finals, in a heartbreaking but thrilling overtime, the team fell 8-7 to Severna Park.
Girls Lacrosse Finishes Strong
2018 brought another strong winning season for the Churchill girls lacrosse team, which finished the year 9-4. The team’s explosive offense averaged 16 goals per game while its sturdy defense yielded only 6 goals per game. The team opened the season with a 17-3 win against tough rival Poolesville as team captain Lizzie Hsu scored 7 goals, midfielder and captain Leah Rubino shined on offense and defense with 5 goals, 5 ground balls, and 5 takeaways, and frosh attack Claire Kim scooped up 4 ground balls. We lost two tough games in a row by one goal each to eventual Regional champ Whitman and to WJ, but defensive stalwart and captain Emily Feigen had 17 saves over the two games to keep both contests close. In a 20-5 win against RM, team playmaker Emma Sumberg dished out a season-high 12 assists. In our biggest win of the year against previously unbeaten Sherwood, Lizzie had 7 goals, Emma had 5 goals and 6 assists, and Leah had 5 goals and 3 ground balls.
