Greetings!
You have just received the June 1, 2017 Chrysalis - the newsletter of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church. Please read through it for information concerning events during the coming month. Chrysalis will be published by the office staff, in this form, near the first of each month -- with special editions during the month (as warranted).
If you desire a printed copy of the Chrysalis you may print this email version (as with any email you receive). There will also be a few printed copies in the narthex for visitors, and for members of HRLC who do not have printing capabilities. [Note: This is an email newsletter and does not paginate the way a non-email newsletter might.]
Should you accidentally (or deliberately) delete this email, you may also find a link to the Chrysalis on our web site (www.hrlcsj.org). Go to the Member "Home" tab, then the "Communication" tab, and then click on "Newsletter" to find the month you are seeking.

Synod Assembly Recap
The 30th annual Sierra Pacific Synod Assembly was called into session by Bishop Mark Holmerud at 1 pm on Thursday, May 4 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Fresno, CA. The Rev. Dr. David Vasquez-Levy joined us as the keynote speaker. The Rev. Dr. Wyvetta Bullock joined us as the ELCA Churchwide Representative and preacher. Dr. Ryan Cumming was our Bible Study Leader.

How's Your Prayer Life?
Believing that prayer is one of the foundations of our corporate and individual faith journeys, Holy Redeemer offers a number of opportunities, and resources, for prayer. It is hoped that members are taking advantage of the resources we produce, as well as the opportunities for prayer that present themselves.
Among the many offerings made available on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis:
- The Weekly Prayer Resources, with a variety of different levels of prayer offered
- The Prayer Wheel, for special prayer requests
- Contemplation and Communion each week on Wednesday at 4:00pm
- Praying and Sharing on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 9:00am
- Prayer Vigil for Members on the 1st Saturday of the month at any time you choose to participate
- Prayer Vigil for Peace in the Middle East each month on the 24th at any time you choose to participate
- Vigil of the Tomb each year during Holy Week
In addition, Holy Redeemer offers continual opportunities for personal meditation, either as individuals or as a group. If you are interested in engaging in one, contact Pastor John.

We are frightened and flee to certitude.
We hide our real selves
and run from our bodily life
into safe mantras of assurance.
We put all our wagons in tight circles of certitude,
imagining that our life there will be safe and happy.
But you, in your relentless rule,
will not let us flee or hide or pretend.
You are like a thief in the night
or like rust that eats away at our pretend world.
You keep after us in your subversive poetry that pierces all of our denials.
You are the God of all truth.
In your truthfulness
you expose our deathliness;
you judge our littleness;
you call us out from our self-denying pride.
Give us courage for your truth
that will make us free,
free for ourselves,
free for you in joy and gladness,
free for all your children
and all your creatures.
