Do You Know Your HIV Status?

HIV AIDS Logo

For the past year, the Urban League has been surveying clients about various health risk factors. Our results showed that many people who visit the Urban League are unsure of their HIV status. The Urban League is hosting a one-day symposium followed by free, confidential, HIV testing the next day. The symposium is focused on - HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education - and will involve brief presentations on several local and statewide efforts seeking to prevent the spread of HIV as well as educate the public on resources available for those living with HIV/AIDS.

The symposium will take place on June 26th from 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM and lunch will be provided. To attend, please RSVP as soon as possible to lragins@ulchatt.net. We truly hope you can attend! We believe this event will help create solid momentum for building a healthier city!

On June 27th from 11:00 - 2:00 the Urban League will be commemorating National HIV Testing Day with free HIV testing, prevention education, door prizes and give aways. Do you know your status? If not, come out and get tested. Testing makes us stronger!

The Urban League's Health Symposia series is funded by the Tennessee Department of Health.

Let's Move Summer Camp
CampThe Urban League's Let's Move Summer Camp ended with a blast as students took a field trip to Coolidge Park for a field day with outdoor games, play in the fountain and rides on the carousel. Over 40 students in grades 1-5 participated in the two week camp focused on preparing students for the next grade level and teaching fitness and nutrition concepts.

Thanks to Pure Holiness Church, the Tennessee Department of Health, the Tennessee Department of Education and the PeyBack (Peyton Manning) Foundation for supporting this summer's camp.

EPB/Urban League Summer Work Experience

EPBThe Urban League is excited to announce the EPB/Urban League Summer 2012 STEM Work-Based Learning Program. This Urban League program will offer a paid work opportunity, workplace exposure and work readiness skills to youth interested in STEM careers. This is a training program intended to provide early work experiences at EPB for young people who might not otherwise have this opportunity. The program is limited to students who have participated in Urban League middle and high school programs and who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the 2012-2013 school year. Students who complete this program will receive a $500 stipend AND $1,000.00 College Scholarship.

This program is supported by EPB.

Workforce Development

Workforce DevelopmentThe Urban League Workforce Department is growing each day by developing new partners and placing clients in new livable wage positions. The last job fair/information session was quite a success! So far, three clients have been placed in positions at US Xpress, several with Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union, and four with Orange Grove Center. A big thanks to the employers who have come to trust the Urban League for providing well-qualified, pre-screened applicants.

Urban League Workforce Development Programs are supported by the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County Government.
