Artistic Director's Message

Dear Friends,

What a 17th season it's been for MOR, culminating in our latest commission, the new opera After Life by Tom Cipullo and David Mason. If you were with us for the premiere at Benaroya Hall on May 11, you'll surely understand how proud I am that MOR was able to bring to life this remarkable work where the ghosts of Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein confront each other over how they responded as artists to evil they saw, and over how each of them managed to survive World War II when so many others did not. Bringing this intense and challenging musical drama to the stage called on the extraordinary gifts of our vocal soloists, our instrumental ensemble, our conductor Stilian Kirov and our director Erich Parce. A week after the premiere, we took After Life to San Francisco as part of MOR's first-ever appearance there. You can read an enthusiastic review of the Seattle premiere here, and a rave on the San Francisco performance here.

If you missed After Life, you'll be able to hear excerpts performed at our free Sparks of Glory outreach concert at the Seattle Art Museum on Saturday, September 26.  We've also recorded the complete opera for a Naxos CD that we expect to release next year.

In the meantime, an exciting 18th season is taking shape to begin this fall. This newsletter will tell you about some of the highlights. The innovative Whim W'him Dance ensemble will join us in November with new dances for a whimsical work by Czech émigré composer Bohuslav Martinu. And next May will bring the world premiere of a stunning new two-act opera by Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer. There's much more, too, so stay tuned!

As always, I'm grateful for your friendship and support that make Music of Remembrance possible. I wish you a wonderful summer, and look forward to seeing you in the months ahead.

Sincerely,

Mina Miller

MOR Artistic Director & Founder

In  Out of Darkness, Heggie and Scheer expand their three MOR-commissioned works -  Another Sunrise, Farewell, Auschwitz and  For a Look or a Touch - and weave them together into a musically and dramatically integrated  two act opera. In this eloquent portrait of survival, they convey the vastness of the Holocaust's scope through emotionally rich portraits of those caught in its grasp. The opera offers compelling musical witness to survival in the face of unimaginable adversity.

Read What the Critics Are Saying about After Life!

"What makes this structure so devastatingly effective is that Mason leaves the climactic nodes of each dramatic confrontation unresolved, left to be filled out by Cipullo's music...Cipullo shows himself to be a natural master of writing for the voice." - Thomas May (Bachtrack.com)

"The nearly full house on hand witnessed a complete artistic and communal success, and if the quality of this concert was indicative of the organization's capabilities and vision, I hope this visit was the first of many to come."
- Mark Rudio (A Beast in the Jungle)

"Despite its weighty themes, the light-touch, clever music kept the opera from sinking into heavy-handedness, avoiding yet another gloomy reminder of the unforgivable time."
  - Angela Allen (Oregon ArtsWatch)
