Can you believe it is June already?  

Time flies when you are having fun. With this mid-year mark we are busy as ever continuing to build partnerships and fulfill our on-going efforts to ensure the strength and reach of EmpowHer Institute.  

This summer we will continue to promote the positive impact we make in the community, which can only forge ahead through support and donations. I am so grateful to Southern California Edison, Women in Technology International (WITI) Foundation, US Bank, and The Women's Foundation for their generosity.  

While their donations make a big difference for EmpowHer, we must still enlist additional support in order to meet our program needs. WITI Next-Gen Conference Girls!  

 

Thanks to sponsorship from Southern California Edison and the WITI Foundation, 10 of our girls attended the Women in Technology International Summit, in Santa Clara, CA from June 3rd - June 4th. At the Next-Gen Conference the girls learned about careers in science and technology, attended workshops and panel discussions with leaders in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and learned what it takes to be successful in these fields. The girls left inspired and hungry to pursue their passions in STEM. We love that!     

EmpowHer Institute has

partnered with Operation Hope and Planned Parenthood to bring  programs to the schools that we team with. In May and June these organizations are bringing financial literacy and economic empowerment as well as health education to our EmpowHer girls, the boys at our partner schools and their families.  Parents learned techniques for talking to their children about sex and the students learned about health, wealth, sex, sexuality, and sorted out myth from fact. This is a wonderful way to introduce crucial life-skills and fundamental responsibility that will serve the students for many years to come. We are excited we were able to bring them this opportunity to learn and ask questions from experts.

 Closing Ceremonies 

June is always an exciting month for our students as they are eager to finish their current grade and start their summer. It is exciting for us too, because although its bittersweet to say goodbye to our girls for the summer months, we are gratified in knowing our program provided them with pivotal lessons during the school year. Closing ceremonies are for our girls, our mentors, our teachers and the parents to recognize and honor the hard work and growth that occurred over the year. We will say a short goodbye for now, and look forward to seeing our girls again in the fall.

Thurgood Marshall Middle School's closing ceremony will take place on June 12th and Environmental Middle School has their closing ceremony on June 15th.
