CASA Child Success Story
In 2015, Emily Urbach was sworn in as a CASA Volunteer Advocate. Shortly after, she took her first case and met the child, John*, then age 9, whom she would spend the next two years learning about, getting to know, and ensuring his voice was heard in the courtroom. John entered the child welfare system because of neglect, substance and physical abuse by his caregivers (mother and her boyfriend); his biological father was absent. Through upheaval and turmoil, Emily remained a constant support as John found permanency and stability.
After John's mother was arrested for drunk driving and admitted that her son was home alone, John disclosed information that his mother and her boyfriend had used alcohol and drugs in his presence and that they had hit one another in domestic violence incidents. John was removed from his home and placed with his grandparents and was moved between different family members during his time in foster care. READ MORE

July Advocate of the Month
Margaret Buck
If you're someone in need - more specifically, a vulnerable child in need - you'd be hard-pressed to find a better advocate than Margaret Buck. Full-time job and a busy family life? Margaret can happily check those boxes, but they've never stopped her from giving back to her community. For at her core, Margaret is the sort of selfless, dedicated individual we often long for, but rarely meet in the flesh. Never about the flash or the glory, or the innumerable superlatives she no doubt deserves, Margaret just rolls up her sleeves and gets to work. READ MORE

National CASA & Colorado CASA
From its beginning in 1977 when Seattle Judge David Soukup called on
community volunteers to advocate for the children involved in abuse
and neglect court cases, the CASA program has grown into a national network of programs. CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties is one of
nearly 1,000 local programs across the country that are members of the National CASA Association. National CASA sets program standards, provides technical assistance, and promotes CASA volunteer advocacy in support of local programs. Click HERE to learn more about National CASA.
In Colorado, CASA Programs are set up by Judicial District and are authorized by state statute. The duties and responsibilities of CASA volunteers are outlined in Colorado state statute C.R.S.§19-1-201 et seq. of the Colorado Children's Code. The law explicitly recognizes that "the work of community volunteers has been proven to be effective in addressing the needs of children. Partnerships between guardians ad litem and community volunteers can enhance the quality of representation for children." CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties was established in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to serve the 17th Judicial District and to recruit, train, and support CASA volunteers in their work with abused and neglected children.
There are 16 CASA programs in Colorado, serving 16 of the 22 Judicial Districts. Colorado CASA is the supporting agency for all 16 programs, coordinating and implementing statewide goals in four key areas: data collection and reporting, legislation, marketing, and fundraising. On Saturday, May 13th, CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties and partners hosted a free, self-guided Historic Downtown Brighton Drive Out Child Abuse Discovery Cruise. During the event, cruisers were invited to wear free CASA ENVISION Eyewear to show their support.
Front Range Auto Sales took the lead by investing $100 per vehicle sold in April to CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties, totaling $4,000. Other partners invested a percentage of sales during April or on the day of the Discovery Cruise, donating an additional $2,200 to CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties. Window Covering Safety Council Partnership
CASA has teamed up with the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to urge parents and caregivers to check their window coverings. Exposed or dangling cords can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children, and it's recommended to retrofit or replace them with today's safer products.
The partnership stems from a deep-rooted commitment to ensure that ALL children are safe in their homes. Since CASA Volunteer Advocates visit the homes and foster homes of children they work with, the partnership is a perfect fit. All CASA Volunteer Advocates are trained to share window covering safety information with the parents, foster parents, and caregivers they come into contact with.
To learn more about window-cord safety, or to order free retrofit kits, go to the Window Covering Safety Council's website
HERE.
