President's Note

Dear Friends,

I can't believe it is already June; all we need is some sunny warm days to enjoy the outside. We had a wonderful Spring Art Show at the Winchendon American Legion this year. Great artwork and great music as always! It was a lot of work, but at the end it was well worth it. Thank you to all the artists and musicians that participated. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who worked the show. If it wasn't for everyone we would not have had such a successful show.

Also, a warm thank you to all our art supporters, friends and residents of the area for coming to the show.

The new "5x7 Off the Wall" art work was very successful. We will definitely do it again next year. This was a GALA fundraiser so thank you all for your generous donations to the wall! Thanks to Surroundings Gallery for framing most of them. The new Judge Critiques went well too. The written critiques have been mailed to all the artists that paid for three professional critiques for each of their paintings. I have read the judges' critiques and I am certain those artists will learn from the judges' analysis of the elements such as line quality, composition, value, color, balance, contrast, etc. Also notes about future development.

I can start working in my yard now that the show is over. I just put in my veggie garden and the garlic is up. Now I'm working in my flower beds. I hung up my new hummingbird feeder that I got at the Boston Flower Show and was sitting outside and saw my first visitor! I purchased a few perennial flowers to plant that they like, so I better get to work so they will stick around.

We are currently posting photos of the Spring Show on our website. Check often at galagardner.org.

We've decided to have a combined YARD SALE & ART SALE. We will be having it inside the Art Gallery's barn. All the yard sale items and artwork items have been donated. It will be held on Saturday, June 3rd. If you have items for the Yard Sale or Art Sale to donate let me know. We are also looking for help during the yard sale.

We will soon be starting to work on our renovations of the Art Gallery. Waiting for it to get a bit warmer. If anyone can find a few hours here and there to help with the gallery let me know.

YARD & ART SALE: Inside Art Gallery's barn, Saturday, June 3rd, 7:30am - 2:00pm.

GALA Art Critique: Saturday, June 3rd, upstairs in main house, 135 Front Street

We have a special Collage Workshop by Jill Pottle on June 11th. Register Now!

A 0.6 mile-long universally accessible trail encircles the grove and a wildflower trail winds through the forest adjacent to the grove. From early spring to the first frost, wildflowers bloom throughout the park. Visitors exploring the trails are often serenaded by song birds which live in the grove.

Mixed Media exhibit: A Retrospective by Barbara Alden Campbell
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

Loire Valley Tour by Barbara Alden Campbell
The Jaffrey Civic Center will host a mixed media exhibit by Barbara Alden Campbell beginning Friday, May 26th -June 27th, in the first floor Auditorium Gallery. The title of the exhibit is A Retrospective by Barbara Campbell. Ms. Campbell began painting at the age of four, when she created her first watercolor painting. She majored in Art & Art History at Beaver Country Day School and after high school attended the Museum School in Boston concentrating on drawing and Art History. Marriage and children interrupted her studies for a substantial time and then she moved to Hancock, NH in1968. Here she was able to resume her painting.

She studied with NH artist Sydney Willis for eleven years and later with Numael Pulido, Richard Whitney and Maine artist Sharon Yates. Ms. Campbell enjoys painting and continues to do so with oils as her preferred medium and "en plein air" as her first choice. Her style is "Impressionist". The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday -Friday from 10 am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10-2. Solo Show: Darcie Lee Hanaway
Gallery Sitka West, Fitchburg, MA

Solo Show: Darcie Lee Hanaway
Saturday, June 3 at 4 PM - 6 PM

Join us as we host Martha's Vineyard painter, Darcie Lee Hanaway on our Solo wall! She will be accompanied by NH painter Melissa Richard and Angelique Ward.

Ms. Hanaway is a whimsical, mixed-media artist who takes inspiration from time, nature, and their cycles and patterns. When Ms. Hanaway makes art, she uses "an intuitive process," she says. "There's no end-product in mind." Her art is typically nonrepresentational and about community, family, and love, and what those things mean to her. Her adventures - from having a baby to living in an Airstream trailer - take on meaning and significance that seem to change continually as life goes on.

The show will also feature the works of two New Hampshire artists whose artwork complements Ms. Hanaway's work, Melissa Richard and Angelique Ward. Ms. Richard's new work, created this past winter, is an "exploration of emotion through color and texture," using mixed media, mostly acrylic and collage. Much of her work examines relationships. It also explores emotions "that don't necessarily have words." Inspired by abstract expressionism, her art has helped her work through many of her own internal struggles. Ms. Richard is an art teacher and participates in art shows throughout New England. She is represented by Gallery Z in Providence, R.I.

Angelique Ward is a self-taught artist who hails from Hudson, N.H. She says that her passion for the arts has ranged from "performing onstage as a singer and in theater pieces, to writing poetry, to creating two-dimensional artworks in acrylic and mixed media." She enjoys blending different art forms, particularly in assemblage, a three-dimensional medium that employs one or more boxes rather than a flat canvas. This method of storytelling is a deeply personal medium that "sets the stage" for her unique poetic mystery.

The show is expected to present big, bold, edgy artwork that will inspire thought about the subjective world within us and the objective world outside of us. Ms. Hanaway and her colleagues are excited to bring a fun, gypsy-like spirit to Fitchburg this summer and invite all to enjoy the exhibition, which will run from June 3 through August 1 at Gallery Sitka, 454 Main Street in Fitchburg. The public is welcome to attend the opening reception on Saturday, June 3, 4 - 6pm. General gallery hours are 10am - 4pm, Thursday through Saturday.

Photography Exhibit on The Villi Pony Farm by Rich Damboise
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

The Jaffrey Civic Center will host a photography exhibit on The Villi Pony Farm by wildlife and portrait photographer, Rich Damboise from May 13th  through June 19th in the ground floor Display Case Gallery. The subjects of the exhibit are the Newfoundland ponies who have been rescued by The Villi Pony Farm in Jaffrey. Mr. Damboise is a native of New Hampshire and grew up exploring nature all his life and now captures the beauty of New England from behind the lens. His love of animals and the outdoors has brought him from his backyard to the edge of the Grand Canyon, shooting from hiking trails, helicopters, kayaks, and drones. He has donated his time to help endangered animals such as the Newfoundland Pony and Kerry Cattle. His work has been featured in publications and magazines throughout Canada and New England and his artwork was also used for the movie poster for "Where Once They Mattered", a documentary about the plight of the Newfoundland Pony. Rich lives in Goffstown, NH with his wife Jody and their 2 dogs, Mikki and Reese. Once a champion motocross racer, Rich still loves action sports. He has done national shoots for the Ironman competitions, snowboarding and BMX.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday -Friday from 10 am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10-2.
