Earth at Risk: Building a Resistance Movement to Save the Planet (DVD)
Derrick Jensen, Arundhati Roy, Thomas Linzey, Waziyatawin, Aric McBay, Stephanie McMillan, and Lierre Keith DVD (4 discs, 7 hrs) | ISBN: 9781604866889 | $20.00 | Flashpoint Press
Earth at Risk is an annual conference featuring environmental thinkers and activists who are willing to ask the hardest questions about the seriousness of our situation.
The seven people in this film present an impassioned critique of the dominant culture from every angle: Thomas Linzey gives a fiery call for community sovereignty; Aric McBay discusses historically effective resistance strategies; and Stephanie McMillan takes down capitalism. One by one, they build an unassailable case that we need to deprive the rich of their ability to steal from the poor and the powerful of their ability to destroy the planet. These speakers offer their ideas on what can be done to build a real resistance movement, one that includes all levels of direct action----action that can actually match the scale of the problem. Earth at Risk includes Derrick Jensen, Arundhati Roy, Thomas Linzey, Waziyatawin, Aric McBay, Stephanie McMillan, and Lierre Keith.

All Power to the Councils!: A Documentary History of the German Revolution of 1918-1919
Edited and translated by Gabriel Kuhn PB | ISBN: 9781604861112 | $26.95
The German Revolution erupted out of the ashes of World War I, triggered by mutinying sailors refusing to be sacrificed in the final carnage of the war. While the Social Democrats grabbed power, radicals across the country rallied to establish a communist society under the slogan "All Power to the Councils!" This definitive documentary history collects manifestos, speeches, articles, and letters from the German Revolution----Rosa Luxemburg, the Revolutionary Stewards, and Gustav Landauer amongst others---introduced and annotated by the editor. Many documents, such as the anarchist Erich Mühsam's comprehensive account of the Bavarian Council Republic, are presented here in English for the first time. The volume also includes materials from the Red Ruhr Army that repelled the reactionary Kapp Putsch in 1920, and the communist bandits that roamed Eastern Germany until 1921. All Power to the Councils! provides a dynamic and vivid picture of a time of great hope and devastating betrayal. "Drawing on newly uncovered material through pioneering archival historical research, Gabriel Kuhn's powerful book on the German workers' councils movement is essential reading to understanding the way forward for democratic worker control today." ----Immanuel Ness, Center for Worker Education, Brooklyn College

Prudence Couldn't Swim
James Kilgore PB | ISBN: 9781604864953 | $14.95 | Switchblade
White ex-convict Cal Winter returns to his home in Oakland, California, one day to find his gorgeous, young, black wife, Prudence, drowned in the swimming pool. Prudence couldn't swim, and Cal concludes she didn't go in the water willingly. Though theirs was a marriage of convenience, he takes the murder personally. Along with his prison homie Red Eye, Cal sets out to find out who did Prudence in. His convoluted and often darkly humorous journey takes him deep into the world of the sexual urges of the rich and powerful, and gradually reveals the many layers of his wife's complex identity. While doing so, Cal and Red Eye must confront their own racially charged pasts if the killer is to be caught.
Author James Kilgore has woven together strands of his own quixotic and complicated life----twenty-seven years as a political fugitive, two decades as a teacher in Africa, and six years in prison----into a heady tale of mystery and consequences.
"James Kilgore's writing is a refreshing blend of literary talent and political insight; something sorely missing from much of the fiction penned by writers on the Left. So often we are told that a commitment to radical change and a rollicking good read mix like oil and water. Along comes Kilgore to put that lie to rest!"
----Frank Wilderson, author of Incognegro: A Memoir of Exile and Apartheid

 | Selma James profiled in the Guardian (UK)
Article and interview by Becky Gardiner
The last time Selma James was interviewed by the Guardian was in 1976. At that time, James was a household name----in feminist households at least... A new generation of feminists is discovering James's work. In a recent article in the London Review of Books, Jenny Turner launched a serious reappraisal of James's campaign. Meanwhile, James's call for a guaranteed income, her insistence that a post-work world might be possible, finds echoes in contemporary movements, from Occupy to the Pirates party.

 | PM Coloring Books featured in the New York Times Article by Austin Considine
Political coloring books aren't new, nor are they limited to one side of the ideological spectrum. In the 1990s there were coloring books about changing families, addressing themes like gay parenting. Recent years have seen a resurgence. PM Press has published coloring books like the feminist-themed "Girls Are Not Chicks," and "Sometimes the Spoon Runs Away With Another Spoon," which challenges gender norms.

 | Vida in Bitch Magazine Review by Nina Lary
As a portrait of political struggle, Vida translates easily to modern times. The current Occupy movement draws on an amalgam of issues that the antiwar movement began to crystallize way back in the '70s. And while feminism has moved up the ranks since Vida Asch's time, we still battle many of the same sidelinings in progressive movements. Recommended if you want to learn more about the '60s political underground, but your eyes glaze over at the mere mention of Marx. Read the full article HERE.

| Robin Hood in Monthly Review Review by Albert Ruben
Paul Buhle argues that the world needs Robin Hood now more than ever. "We need Robin because rebellion against deteriorating conditions is inevitable..." Plainly, he issued the prediction before the advent of the Occupy movement. The reader, nonetheless, takes away from Buhle's book a strong sense that the author must surely discern in that movement fertile soil for the many Robins he is convinced we are all desperately waiting for. It makes for a thought-provoking conclusion to an exhaustive study of tales that, whatever their radical credentials may or may not be, is an informative and entertaining examination of an enduring folk hero.

 | Cook, Eat, Thrive in Library Journal Review by Lisa Campbell
Blogger, traveler, and pastry cook Tienzo's (joytienzo.com) approach to veganism ditches fake cheese and other imitation products in favor of natural ingredients such as nuts, seeds, and seaweed. The "Chèvre" in her Red Pepper-Chèvre Frittata is made from pureed raw cashews, agar flakes, and tahini. Likewise, her desserts are refreshingly free of strange-sounding egg and dairy replacements. For readers with special diets, there are symbols identifying raw, low fat, soy-free, and wheat-free recipes. Readers tired of novelty or single-subject vegan cookbooks will appreciate this balanced collection, which provides menus for many occasions (e.g., Kid-Friendly Dinner; French Bistro Supper; Vegan Wedding Fare).

Moments of Excess on Rabble.ca
Review by Stefan Christoff
As a collective project, Moments of Excess is a meaningful read for readers in Quebec and across Canada, as students' sustain a collective uprising to fight for accessible education, a movement clearly inspired by anarchist models of horizontal activism deeply explored in the book. Moments of Excess also offers important reflections for participants in the grassroots Occupy movement for economic justice across North America, sparked by Occupy Wall Street this past fall. The mass Occupy collective actions have been rooted in anarchist practices, exemplified in the general assembly decision making model and vocalized by the human mic echoing on city streets across the continent.
