Bikram Yoga Exton

When did you start practicing yoga?
I started practicing Bikram yoga in March 2008. My mother had been practicing and took me to my first class. I have to admit that I didn't love it the first time. It was harder and hotter than I expected, and when I realized that the same 26 postures were practiced each class, I thought I would get bored with that. Fortunately, a few hours after my first class, I felt amazing, and different than I had ever felt after a typical workout. I knew I had to try it again! After my second class, I was hooked and knew the practice would be part of my life forever.
What brought you to BYX?
As I continued to practice, it became clear to me that Bikram yoga was special. I felt more grounded and my life was changing in ways I never expected. I felt better physically and mentally, and I wanted to share these benefits with as many people as possible. I attended teacher training in fall of 2008 and opened Bikram Yoga Exton on November 14, 2011.
Why do you keep coming?
My life outside the yoga room is better when I practice. I'm a better mother, wife and business owner. I'm  calmer, more focused, and more productive. I manage stress better and feel better physically. The BYX community is amazing, and I love being part of it. I have made some of my closest friends through Bikram Yoga.
What benefits have you seen from your practice?
I am physically stronger, and more flexible. I am mentally stronger, and more flexible. I am emotionally stronger, and more flexible. Bikram yoga has helped me process the grief of losing my father when I was a child, and it has helped me keep my heart open. It has helped me heal the body image issues of being a girl growing up in the 1980s and 90s. I am kinder to myself and others, and I'm more confident.
What has surprised you about practicing?
It NEVER gets boring. The postures are the same, but I am constantly changing. And, I love that because I can really see the progress I'm making in my practice. The potential for growth never ends.
What do you enjoy about teaching?
Teaching is an extension of my practice. Teaching gives me a deeper understanding of the Bikram practice, but more importantly, it allows me to connect with people. Watching people work to be their best selves is an amazing thing. I'm privileged to share this practice with so many.
What other activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, watching my kids play sports, hiking, paddle boarding, going to the beach, and I love a good Dave Matthews Band concert.
How has yoga improved/changed your life?
Bikram yoga saved me. When I started practicing I had no idea I needed saving. My life was good, but it was very busy and often overwhelming. I had a loving family, a good job, great friends, but I was disconnected from myself, and therefore not able to fully appreciate it. The constant motion of life was a lot and I didn't know how to be still. As I practiced, I reconnected with myself and began to really see no t the me I thought the world wanted me to be... the real me. I learned to be okay with discomfort rather than run from it. I learned to heal old wounds, and, the more I practiced, the more I felt empowered.
What's your favorite posture and why?
This always changes. Right now, my favorite posture is Camel pose. It's a difficult pose, but the more I breathe, and relax, the better it is! I have a quote at my desk that reads, "you create your own calm". In Camel pose I have to create my own calm. It's a great reminder for me to stop struggling and breathe both in, and out of, the hot room.

Students often ask me how they can get the most out of their Bikram Yoga practice. My answer varies slightly depending on the individual, but the message is the same. Consistency. Consistency for some might mean practicing once or twice a week. For others, it's a daily practice. The frequency of practicing will be different for different people, but maintaining a consistent practice yields maximum benefits.

In an effort to help keep your practice consistent this summer we are having our first
BYX Summer Challenge! Practice an average of 2 times per week during the 13 weeks of summer!

Ultimately we practice yoga to make our lives OUTSIDE of the hot room better...  and that means during the summer too. We hope you will join us!
