JUNE NEWS
June / 5 / 2017
Dear Family and Friends of Forest Hills,

With the 25th Annual Golf Tournament coming up in just two weeks, I am very pleased to announce a special guest speaker: Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist, Joe Krebs! You won't want to miss this year's event, which will be extra special to honor the milestone anniversary. Read on in this newsletter for more information on how to participate -- there's not much time left!

In other exciting news, I am so pleased to announce that the DC Health Care Association (DCHCA) selected our own Major Wanda Mitchell as "Nurse of the Year" at its annual convention in May! Wanda is our Director of Nursing and Health Services for Forest Hills and Forest Side. She was recognized for her work over the past 2 1/2 years as a full time Nurse Case Manager in the US Army, while simultaneously carrying out her responsibilities here in our community.

DCHCA, the local branch of the American Health Care Association, represents all nursing homes in the District of Columbia. Wanda received a cash award, along with a plaque from DCHCA, which will be displayed outside her office for the next year. Read on in this newsletter for some excerpts from Wanda's nomination.

As always, it is my honor and privilege to serve you and your loved ones here at Forest Hills and Forest Side.

Looking forward to see you all around our community,

Mary Savoy, RN, MS, LNHA

April 2017 Ceca Award Winner
Donald Philogenes

Congratulations to Donald Philogenes on winning the April 2017 Ceca Award! Last month we celebrated his award at Forest Hills with some of the nice things people had to say about him:

"Donald is very unassuming and quiet. If he's given a task he puts his all into it and takes care of it. If he is setting up the assembly hall single-handedly, or breaking it down again without a blink, it's never a never a question for Donald! He is receptive to both staff and resident requests."

Thank you to Donald for all you do for our residents and our community!

Nurse of the Year 2017
Major Wanda Mitchell

An excerpt from the nomination that landed Major Wanda Mitchell the "Nurse of the Year" award from DCHCA:

"Our nominee has had a very exciting and productive career as a nurse. As a Director of Nursing (DON), our nominee manages the nursing department and supervises all clinical activities. Because her responsibilities are so typical for any facility's DON, you might ask what makes our nominee different. The answer is simple: she performs her duties as DON on a full time basis, while simultaneously fulfilling her responsibilities as a full time, active-duty RN Case Manager in the US Army.

In August of 2014, our nominee was called from her Army Reserve status to serve as a Case Manager for the Wounded Warrior Project at Fort Belvoir, Virginia...When the initial assignment was up in August of 2016, her orders were extended indefinitely. She was only able to obtain permission from her military superiors to allocate 1 day per week to work her civilian job, but she knew that would not be enough time to run her department. She decided that she would work for the Army 4 days each week until 5PM when her office closed, go home to change into civilian clothes, and then report to our facility at 6."
