It's All About the Kids!

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me...for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 19:14

It doesn't get any better than Christian youth sharing and living their faith with their peers from halfway around the world!  In early June, six teens (and six adults) from Summit and Risen Savior will head to Cambodia to do just that.

Our two churches are sponsoring a Youth Conference for young people from all over Cambodia.  They will leave their families, some for the first time, to travel with their pastors to the coastal city of Sihanoukville for a 3-day gathering with other young Christians.  In the past, our mission teams have actively lead these conferences, but this year we're playing a supporting role as the Cambodian pastors step up to lead the sessions.  The one exception is a session titled "Youth and Relationships", which will be lead entirely by the young people from our mission team.  They have been asked to reflect on challenges in their own lives as teenagers and how their faith has helped them overcome difficult situations and temptations.  We pray that sharing their personal stories of God's presence in their lives our kids will encourage their Cambodian peers as they grow in their relationship with Jesus.

After the conference, our team will head to Stronghold Cambodia.  We will visit the homes of some of the children to gain a better understanding of the challenges of their living conditions and to pray with their families.  We will also help the teachers at Stronghold with English and computer lessons

Our final day at Stronghold will be a celebration of International Children's Day!  We'll accompany almost 100 kids for a day at the beach.  In the morning, our team will organize songs, Bible stories and activities that focus on God's love for every child.  In the afternoon, the kids get to play in the ocean under our watchful supervision!

As always, our trip will include visits to the S21 prison and the Killing Fields as well as the Royal Palace, a silk farm and Angkor Wat.  It is an outstanding opportunity for all of us to experience the pain of Cambodia's recent past, the beauty and wonder of its culture and how our shared faith with Cambodian Christians can transcend it all.

As our youth and adults embark on this journey, we thank you for your prayers and support.  These trips to share the Gospel of our Lord with those who desperately need to hear it would not be possible without the generous backing our congregations.  We ask for special prayers for all the youth, our kids and the Cambodian kids alike.  May God bless their travel and be with them as they share and grow in their relationships with Him.

God bless,
Lori Anderson

Journey From Unbelief to Faith: June Adult Bible Study

Beginning June 4th in the Gathering Grounds Fellowship Hall join us for the next
Summer Blockbuster Bible study: The Journey from Unbelief to Faith. The passage leading from alienation toward God to faith in Christ as Lord and Savior is a road that looks different for each of us. Follow the stories of four individuals from widely dissimilar pasts who each arrived at the same conviction: Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and because He is they must tell others about it.

Consider their lives. With an upbringing marred by violence and abuse from her belligerent, alcoholic father, one woman's journey was set in motion by a record album. For one young man, an allegiance to evolutionary theory and science trumped any idea of the spiritual at work in his life, until he grasped the nature of faith. For an Orthodox Jew it was a lengthy apprenticeship-in the back row of a Christian church-that became for him a brand new kind of life. Finally, for a New Age stargazer, a woman deep into Eastern religions who charted other people's futures by astrology, it was an attempt to get Christianity out of her system that eventually won her over.

Hosted by Rev. Dr. John Nunes, this four-session Bible study offers the viewpoints of four people who have made a remarkable journey. Theirs has been a pilgrimage from the outer edges of unbelief and apathy to a place where today Jesus Christ commands their heartfelt devotion. The road to faith was not easy for them, and many were the times when abandoning it seemed the preferred route to travel. Still, the persistence of the Holy Spirit's work in their lives brought about a different outcome, with an eternal transformation.

Consider This "Tip" To Help You Save for College

The book of Proverbs is filled with practical guidance for living a life rooted in the faith. One well-known, often quoted verse is Proverbs 22:6, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." In other words, if we teach kids good practices and disciplines when they're young, those ideas will likely stay with them for the rest of their lives.

As parents, we do our best to prepare the children in our lives for adulthood. We serve as role models, we teach them about God's love and grace, how to be kind, have good manners and treat others as we want to be treated. We want them to be successful, to thrive and to live abundant lives, yet many of us stop short of teaching them basic money management. We have good intentions-after all, they are little and we don't want to burden them with such adult matters. But why not consider preparing them to develop solid values and good money habits while they are still children? It doesn't have to be burdensome or complicated!

To support you in this, Thrivent Financial has designed materials to assist you in having age-appropriate conversations around the financial values you want your children to have. We've simplified the conversation by creating three basic money choices:

Sharing We can share our money with organizations and causes we care about, such as our church or local food shelves.

Saving: We can save money for our goals, such as a new bicycle or a college education.

Spending We can spend our money wisely on things we need and want, such as food or a family vacation.

One day, you'll look at your kids and realize they've grown up to be successful adults who understand the importance of being good stewards with the resources God has entrusted to their care. And, for a parent, what could be better than that?
