JUNE

"In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt."

                                                               - Margaret Atwood, poet and environmental activist

There are men that humbly make sacrifices for others.  Men that patiently teach their children the skills and values they need to become strong and intelligent adults.  Men like my dad who founded Tom's Thumb Nursery in 1973 and instilled in me a love for plants at an early age.  He often reminded me that if you love your job, it won't be work.  Thank you, Dad, for creating my dream job!

We continue with our annual tribute to fathers.  With any purchase prior to June 22, you may register for a $200 gift certificate.  A drawing will be held at the end of business on Father's Day.

Look for great specials throughout the nursery during the month of June and watch your email for future events and summer sales!

Hope to see you soon.

Seasonal Ideas and Information

 June Seasonal Checklist

The following is a list of activities to consider for your June gardening:
  • Vegetables and Herbs - The most common watering mistake that gardeners make is to water too little, too often.  Established plants do best with a good soaking less often.  Drip irrigation is better than sprinklers.  Drip irrigation puts the water on the soil and into the root zone.  Sprinklers wet the foliage which can promote disease and waste water to evaporation.

    Blossom End Rot

    Cause:  Calcium imbalance
    Treatment:  Add calcium

    Bonide
    Rot Stop

This tomato and vegetable food contains calcium.

    Tomato Blight

    is a fungal infection

  • Perennials & Annuals - These perennials love the heat and come back year after year:  lantana, salvias, verbenas, coreopsis, rudbeckias, grasses, potato vine, and purple coneflowers.  Once again the nursery is stocked full of your  favorite purslane in 4" pots , 6" pots and hanging baskets.

 From our Landscape Architect

"Let's not forget the palms!"  by Janielle Guzinski

Regardless of where you live in Galveston, palm trees are a part of life.  They are on our sign, in our yards, and planted in our pots.  There are many new and different palm trees out there and knowing what to plant where can be a question.  Just like when planting shade or flowering trees, you need to consider where you live and what the conditions are where the palm is going to be.  A beachside home gets all that salt, but you might be able to protect a less tolerant palm if it is sheltered.  The same goes for those bayside homes and the cruel, north wind in the winter.  Another thing to consider is how the palm grows.  Is it a palm that stays short or is it only short because it hasn't had time to grow up yet?  And how long will it take to get to that mature height?  Keep in mind that the height in ideal conditions may be significantly taller than what it will do in Galveston's sandy, nutrient poor soil with the occasional hurricane.

I've created a couple of graphs to help you know what the tolerances and growth is like for the palms we carry here at the nursery.  I advise anyone to look in a book or on a reputable website if they want to learn more about palms.  We may not be walking encyclopedias, but you can always come in and ask us about our palms as well.

SUGAR WATER RECIPE

Combine four parts hot water to one part real sugar.  Mix it up until it's completely dissolved.  Once it cools to room temperature, it is ready.   Do not use honey or sugar substitutes.

RED DYE DEBATE

You don't need red water to attract hummingbirds.  In fact, it could be bad for the birds (scientists are still figuring this one out).  Either way, it is not worth the risk.  It's time to break the habit!

CLEANING

Sugar water eventually goes bad.  You should change the water every few days or even sooner if it's really hot out.  Also, clean your feeders occasionally.  Mold can collect, so you want to make sure you're offering hummingbirds clean, safe water.
