JUNE

"Any man can be a father, but it takes a

special person to be a dad."

                                                               - Author unknown

There are many variations of this proverb, but the meaning implied remains the same.

There are men that humbly make sacrifices for others.  Men that patiently teach their children the skills and values they need to become strong and intelligent adults.  Men like my dad who founded Tom's Thumb Nursery in 1973 and instilled in me a love for plants at an early age.  He often reminded me that if you love your job, it won't be work.  Thank you, Dad, for creating my dream job!

To honor all dads this month, we will be giving away a set of Radius Garden Tools.

Be sure and register for your chance to win.

Also look for great specials throughout the nursery during the month of June.

Hope to see you soon.

Seasonal Ideas and Information

 June Seasonal Checklist

The following is a list of activities to consider for your June gardening:
  • Vegetables and Herbs - The most common watering mistake that gardeners make is to water too little, too often.  Established plants do best with a good soaking less often.  Drip irrigation is better than sprinklers.  Drip irrigation puts the water on the soil and into the root zone.  Sprinklers wet the foliage which can promote disease and waste water to evaporation.

    Blossom End Rot

    Cause:  Calcium imbalance
    Treatment:  Add calcium

    Bonide

  • Perennials & Annuals - These perennials love the heat and come back year after year:  lantana, salvias, verbenas, coreopsis, rudbeckias, grasses, potato vine, and purple coneflowers.  Once again the nursery is stocked full of your  favorite purslane in 4" pots , 6" pots and hanging baskets.

 From our Landscape Architect

"How We Love Plumeria!?!"  by Janielle Guzinski

Plumeria/Frangipani is one of those plants that you love even though it looks a bit strange all winter.  The branches resemble muscled arms, and the leaves seem so big to be only at the ends.  But when it blooms, there's nothing like it.

Unfortunately, many of us were watching our plumerias closely this spring because of winter damage.  The winter seemed so long and that north wind was just unending.  To help our plants recover we all cut off black or soggy ends of branches and have been anxiously waiting for leaves to sprout.  And, in general, they have.  But what to do now?  To encourage your plants it is good to fertilize just after they leaf out.  Plumeria love a low nitrogen, high phosphorus fertilizer like the NutriStar plumeria food or the organic Medina Hasta-Gro-Plant.  Either of these is a great choice for feeding your plumeria.

However, if the damage was more severe than blackened tips and your plants aren't showing any signs of life, you may need to replace your plants.  Before you do, take a clean knife and slice a little bit of the trunk down below the damage to see if there is any green left in the plant.  If not, it is time to start again.  At the nursery we have new plumerias in 1 gallon pots and as unrooted cuttings if you're willing to wait for a small plant to grow big or in large pots if you want that instant plumeria effect.  We also have some variegated plumerias with speckled leaves.

Now if you see a plumeria that you just love or you want to share one of yours with a friend or loved one, they are ridiculously easy to propagate.  They will root with very little bother.  Cut off a nice branch, maybe one with a fork or two, and set it aside for a minimum of three days; two weeks is best.  When you plant it in a pot or in the ground, you may want to stake it to keep it growing straight.  Water when you first plant it, but sparingly thereafter.  Remember plumeria are not water loving, and you should love them by keeping them dry.
