A Spring Cleaning in Downtown

This month at the monthly Downtown Business District Meeting we discussed some areas of maintenance like tree trimming and sidewalk cleaning that could improve the looks of downtown.  This led me to think about areas where you as a business owner could improve the appearance of your own business frontage.

1.  Enter your business through the front door.  So often we park in the back and use a service entrance to enter and exit our building, never seeing the accumulation of spiderwebs, grimy hand prints and wind blown yuck that lands at our front doorway.  Sweeping your storefront and sidewalks often, will help their appearance.

2.  If you aren't going to water the plants in your outside planters or the wine barrels you planted several years ago are breaking apart, remove them. No planters are better than broken down planters filled with dead flowers.

3.  Are your windows bright and shiny?  Or grungy and filled with dead flies?

4.  Local event planners love that you are willing to hang their posters in your store front...but when the event is over...it's over

5.  Please follow the City's guidelines for outside displays.  They need to be adjacent to your building, no larger than 6ft. long, 5 ft. high and 2 ft wide leaving a clearance of 2 feet on either side of your doorway.   They cannot project into the sidewalk in such a way as to block passage nor obstruct access by walkers or wheel chairs. Click here for the Downtown Outdoor Merchandise Display Guidelines provided by the City of Healdsburg.

6.  Remove temporary signs after 30 days

7.  Portable signs (A-frames) are allowable with a permit from the City and can only be located in front  of your building, away from the path of travel and only used during your business hours. Click here for the Temporary Sign, Portable Sign, and Menu Board Sign Guidelines provided by the City of Healdsburg.

City Council Expands Mandatory Water Restrictions

On May 18th, in response to the Emergency Regulation adopted by the State Water Resource Control Board, Healdsburg City Council voted to expand the Stage 2 mandatory water conservation measures originally enacted in January 2014. Council voted to implement a resolution to limit outdoor irrigation of ornamental landscaping or turf to no more than two days a week. Watering of ornamental landscaping and turf is only allowed on Tuesdays and Fridays between the hours of 8 pm and 7am. This is in addition to the following mandatory water conservation measures that remain in effect:

  • Routinely inspect for and repair irrigation leaks
  • Correct and repair plumbing leaks within 72 hours of discovery or notification
  • Adjust irrigation valve run-time to account for fluctuation in weather and to avoid runoff
  • Use of water from a fire hydrant for non-emergency uses is prohibited
  • Use of potable water for construction purposes is prohibited
  • Washing of sidewalks, walkways, driveways and other hard-surfaced areas is prohibited
  • Washing motor vehicles without using a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off is prohibited
  • Irrigating turf or ornamental landscapes during and 48 hours following measureable precipitation is prohibited
  • Water may only be served upon request at restaurants and other food/beverage service establishments
  • Operators of hotels/motels must provide guests with the option of choosing not to have towels and linens laundered daily
  • Irrigating ornamental turf on public street medians with potable water is prohibited

To help residents conserve water, the City of Healdsburg is providing the following rebates and incentives: direct install toilet program; low flow toilet rebate; CEE Tier 3 clothes washer rebate; lawn conversion rebate; irrigation system audit (coming June 2015); irrigation system equipment rebate (coming June 2015); home water audit (coming June 2015). In addition, we are offering an educational water conservation series. Scheduled workshops will be held at City Hall from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm and will include:

HUSD Reviews Graduation Requirements to Meet 21st Century College & Career Demands
Healdsburg High School

The Healdsburg Unified School District Board of Trustees and District leadership team anticipate proposing higher standards to the current high school graduation requirements to ensure that graduates are well prepared for the 21st century demands of college and career opportunities.

"The expectations for future high school graduates are vastly different as a result of global competition. Our graduates need to be equally or better prepared as students in other countries." said Jeff Harding, HUSD Superintendent. "A Healdsburg High School diploma must reflect the academic preparation necessary to prepare all students to enter the new global work environment."

The District leadership is meeting with parents, teachers, students, and local business owners to learn how to best prepare Healdsburg students for college and career options. The Board of Trustees will use this community input, along with benchmarking successful practices from high performing districts to develop a proposal to adjust the graduation requirements.

Healdsburg High School's current graduation requirements exceed or meet California standards for graduation. The HUSD Board of Trustees is considering increasing graduation standards in math, science, career/technical education, and possibly foreign language. In 2014, Healdsburg High School extended course offerings to a seven period day, providing students with more options to complete both required and elective courses.

The Board of Trustees invites all interested persons to comment on this topic by contacting the Superintendent. A proposal for an increase in graduation standards is expected to be approved during the fall of 2015. Higher standards, if approved, will be phased in over time to ensure that all students can satisfy the requirements.
