Empowerment Through Technology

Greetings from the Executive Director

Austin Free-Net is gearing up for the summer and we are excited about promoting digital inclusion and launching new digital literacy projects. We kicked off June by participating in one of the largest civic events in Austin, the 5th Annual ATX Hack for Change hosted by St. Edward's University. The 3-day hackathon focuses on social good projects submitted by the community and hacked on by the community.  AFN submitted three technical projects that will provide online support for clients with low digital literacyskills. Read more about these exciting new projects .

AFN is committed to finding additional opportunities that will help our clients become independent computer users. Thank you for your continued support this year. Your financial gift, the gift of your personal time and your corporate philanthropy are gratefully accepted and thoughtfully paid forward to our clients.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Juanita Budd

AFN Celebrates Volunteers and Awards Golden Mouse

Austin Free-Net Volunteers are "One in a Million"!  On June 2, AFN celebrated our amazing volunteers at an Appreciation Luncheon at Austin's famous "Juan in Million" restaurant. Every day our volunteers support our mission of ending the digital divide. Last year, Austin Free-Net volunteers provided 33,168 hours of their time, which has a tremendous impact on our clients.

Volunteer and Outreach Manager, Nancy Green, awarded Patrick Pollard, AFN's highest honor "The Golden Mouse" for his dedication to serving the organization. As a former Austin Free-Net client, Patrick is committed to giving back to the organization that helped him many years ago. He is the second volunteer to receive AFN's award.

Digital Inclusion Week 2017
AFN was excited to be a part of the National Digital Inclusion Alliance's Digital Inclusion Week Celebration, May 8-13, 2017. More than 200 people participated in activities we hosted to raise awareness of digital inequities and our efforts to close those gaps.

Throughout the week, AFN teamed up with the City of Austin, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin, Skillpoint Alliance, and Google Fiber. The festivities kicked off with a Proclamation presented by Mayor ProTem Kathie Tovo at the City Council Chambers. Activities included a "Cyber Seniors" free movie screening, a Smartphone Training and Digital Inclusion Symposium.
