HARWOOD PREPARES FOR LEADERSHIP TRANSITION

On May 14 Harwood Museum of Art
Governing Board Chair Marcia Winter announced that Harwood Director Susan Longhenry will be leaving the Harwood in order to serve as Director and Chief Curator at the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Susan will continue as director at the Harwood until July 24 to complete several projects, and to facilitate a smooth transition in management.

Marcia states, " The Governing Board, Staff, and the University of New Mexico are proud of the many accomplishments of The Harwood Museum of Art during Susan Longhenry's tenure as Director. Among these are the successful completion of a $6.3 million capital fundraising campaign which enabled us to complete an 11,000 square foot museum expansion, on time and without debt. We secured $716,000 from the New Mexico Legislature and the University of New Mexico for building repairs required to maintain our historic adobe building. Museum attendance increased by 43% and membership by 30%. Annual fundraising increased by 197% and the number of donors by 74%. The Museum achieved Core Documents Verification from the American Alliance of Museums, and is in the process of securing full AAM accreditation. Major gifts were secured including the Gus Foster Collection of 341 works by contemporary artists including Larry Bell, Ken Price, and Ron Davis. Additionally, a collection of 46 bultos, santos and prints by Gustavo Victor Goler was acquired through partial gift from the collector and fundraising. A significant gift of 408 works by Taos Moderns Louis Ribak and Beatrice Mandelman became part of our permanent collection, along with a $150,000 endowment to support the care of these works. The Museum was awarded $150,000 from IMLS, our first Federal grant, to establish an on-site digital photo studio, photograph the entire collection, and publish the museum's collection catalogue on our web site (schedule to launch this summer). Recently, The Harwood was awarded $100,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation and $40,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts for the traveling exhibition Mabel Dodge Luhan & Company: American Moderns and the West, which will open in Taos next May."

A search timeline will be developed soon, along with plans for interim leadership.

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who supported us during the May 15 opening receptions for the Harwood's summer exhibitions. These wonderful people contributed over thirty hours of time welcoming the Harwood's guests, and making the evening even more special.  According to the US Department of Labor,  62.8 million people - or nearly 25% of Americans - volunteered their time in 2013. We at the Harwood are very grateful to the generous people who are a part of this effort,  and who contribute their time to benefit their community.

If you are interested in joining the next event as a volunteer, please contact Manager of Membership, Volunteers and Events Shemai Rodriguez at 758.9826, extension 109 or [email protected].

Last month we learned that the Harwood has been awarded $40,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of the exhibition
Mabel Dodge Luhan & Company: American Moderns and the West.  This is the first NEA grant that the Harwood has ever received. This project had previously been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.  Go to this link to read more about the exhibition, which will open at the Harwood on May 22, 2016 before traveling to at least two other venues.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

Thank you to the many people who joined us on May 15 to celebrate the opening of the Harwood's summer exhibitions. We're pleased to collaborate with organizations throughout Taos on a centennial celebration of the Taos Society of Artists.  This summer the Harwood is exhibiting fifty-nine works by Taos Society of Artists Members in three galleries. There's never been a better time to experience this beautiful work, and to celebrate the legacy shared by The Harwood Museum of Art and the Taos Society of Artists.

On another note, thank you for the many kind words and good wishes that I've received since announcing my upcoming transition.  I'll be here through July 24, and - as always - my door is open.  Contact me at [email protected] if you have any thoughts that you'd like to share about the Harwood, and its role in our community.  In the meantime, please know that it has been an extraordinary honor for me to serve this wonderful institution.

See you at the Harwood!

Susan Longhenry

OUR NEW WELCOME CENTER!

If the Harwood looks different the next time you walk through our front door, you're not imagining things!  Last month we debuted our new Admissions/Museum Store counter. Designed by James Mason, who designed the beautiful casework in the Museum Store, the new counter streamlines the entry process and creates a much more user-friendly experience for our visitors. Kudos to Director of Visitor Services Glory Ann Penington (pictured) for coordinating this process, to Facilities team members Eric DeHerrera and Al Espinoza for making the infrastructure work, and to the Museum Store and Admissions team who took this space apart and put it back together!
