PARDON OUR MESS!        Limited Museum Hours
June 9-12

Repairs to the Harwood's exterior, generously funded by the New Mexico Legislature and the University of New Mexico, kick back into high gear this month.  Because the repairs include extensive work on the Museum's front entrance portal, the Harwood will be open to the public on a limited basis from Monday, June 9 through and including Thursday, June 12.  On those days public guided tours led by Harwood staff members will be offered at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the Museum will be closed to the public the rest of the time. No reservations are necessary for the public tours.  Guided group tours outside those hours are available by contacting us at education@harwoodmuseum.org.

Thank you for your patience during this important maintenance work on our beautiful historic building!

WELCOME DIRECTOR OF VISITOR SERVICES GLORY ANN PENINGTON!

Glory Ann Penington

We're thrilled to welcome to the Harwood's team Glory Ann Penington, who joined us last month as Director of Visitor Services.   Glory's role includes oversight of the Harwood's museum store and admissions areas, meaning that she and her team play an important role in visitor orientation, wayfinding and general visitor services.

Glory tells us that her heart has been in Taos for many years, and that she is happy that the rest of her has now followed!

"I am very excited to join The Harwood Museum of Art's team and serve in this rich environment for the arts," said Glory. "I am eagerly embracing my new role as Director of Visitor Services as I draw on my expertise to welcome and engage all of the Harwood's visitors."

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

What a thrill it was to welcome over 300 of you last month to the opening celebrations for the Harwood's summer exhibitions!  Highlights from the Gus Foster Collection and John Connell:  Cheap Secrets of the East are both on view through September 7, so there's plenty of time for either a first-time or a repeat viewing.  Don't forget that Museum admission is free to Taos County residents every Sunday.

Heading into June, our schedule is filled with dynamic offerings ranging from Teen Art Explorations to compelling films.  I'm particularly excited about this Saturday evening's screening of Poustinia, The Art of Gendron Jensen - a remarkable documentary about an extraordinary artist.  The screening of this 28-minute film will be followed by a discussion with Gendron Jensen - the artist himself - and Art Critic Ann Landi.  I'll be there, and I hope that you will be too.

See you at the Harwood!

FILMS IN THE ARTHUR BELL AUDITORIUM

POUSTINIA The Art of Gendron Jensen Saturday, June 7 - 7 p.m.

Poustinia tells the story of Gendron Jensen, a man passionately devoted to his artistic calling. Gendron Jensen draws bones. Detailed, precise, wondrous images of bones. Kicked out of a monastery in his 20s, Jensen spent 17 years building the foundation of his artistic life on a rented farm in the north woods of Minnesota before moving to the mountains of New Mexico. Called a 'forest eccentric', a technical virtuoso and a romantic visionary, Jensen conjures art from nature and his meticulously rendered, monumental drawings compel us to look beyond the ordinary to a deeper, more spiritual realm.  This 28-minute film, directed by Kristian Berg,  will be followed by a discussion with Gendron Jensen and Art Critic Ann Landi.

VISITORS                                                     Friday, June 13 - 7 p.m.                            Saturday, June 14 - 1 p.m.

Thirty years after Koyaanisqatsi, Godfrey Reggio-with the support of Philip Glass and Jon Kane-once again leapfrogs over earth-bound filmmakers and creates another stunning, wordless portrait of modern life. Presented by Steven Soderbergh in Black and White digital 4K projection, Visitors reveals humanity's trancelike relationship with technology which, when commandeered by extreme emotional states, produces massive effects far beyond the human species. The film is visceral, offering the audience an experience beyond information about the moment in which we live. Comprised of only seventy-four shots, Visitors takes viewers on a journey to the moon and back to confront them with themselves.

DANCING IN JAFFA
Friday, June 20 - 7 p.m.
Saturday, June 21 - 1 p.m.

After decades abroad, renowned ballroom dancer Pierre Dulaine returns to his hometown of Jaffa, Israel, nostalgic for the streets of his youth but nervous and dismayed by the strong current of racial animosity that now serves as the norm. Fueled by his belief in dancing's power to build self-esteem and social awareness, Dulaine brings his popular Dancing Classrooms program to three diverse, Jaffa-based schools where he teaches ballroom basics to the ethnically mixed population of children. Dulaine selects the most focused dancers to train for a citywide competition, pairing Palestinians with Jews, putting many of the children's and, more pointedly, their families' beliefs to the test. As Dulaine's passion for dance and no-nonsense style of teaching rubs off on the reluctant children, the competition offers the perfect window into their lives. Hilla Medalia's story beautifully shows these historical archenemies forging an innocent but ultimately meaningful relationship that quickly takes on a much larger significance than what initially meets the eye. Dancing in Jaffa is a sweet and incredibly moving tale filled with moments of truth, poignancy and humor, offering a glimmer of hope in the intractable conflict.

HANK AND ASHA                                             Friday, June 27 - 7 p.m.                          Saturday, June 28 - 1 p.m.
