Dear resident,

Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. Summer is here and the children are out of school. If you are looking for activities or summer camps for your children please be sure to check out Miami-Dade Parks .

I also want to wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day this Fourth of July weekend .

Grand Opening of Animal Service Center in District 12
 

Commissioner Diaz welcomes the Pet Adoption and Protection Center to District 12. The grand opening took place on June 13. This state of the art facility is approximately 70,000 square feet and offers spacious air-conditioned kennels, several outdoor canine excercise and play areas and a community room for cats to play in. The new facility will offer the ability to expand our spay and neuter services. It is located at 3599 NW 79th Avenue in Doral. Pet lovers are welcome to take a tour and hopefully adopt.
Legislation News



Partnership with University of Florida 
Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation for collaboration between Miami-Dade Animal Services and the University of Florida. The University of Florida (UF), which is the state's only public College of Veterinary Medicine, will assist with veterinary services, including spay and neuter surgeries and shelter medicine training.  

Fee Waivers for Veterans looking to adopt a pet   
Commissioner Diaz co-sponsored legislation waiving the animal services fee for veterans to adopt and spay/neuter a pet for free.   
Commissioner Diaz teams up with Farm Share to Feed Families

Commissioner Diaz teamed up with Senator Anitere Flores, Representative Carlos Trujillo and Farm Share  to provide food to Miami-Dade County families. The event took place on June 18 at the Florida International University Engineering Campus. Families received poultry, fresh vegetables and fruits.    
Homes for our Heroes
On June 10, Commissioner Diaz joined Building Homes for Heroes and Chase representatives by surprising three military veterans and their families with mortgage free homes at a special luncheon at Larios on the Beach restaurant in Miami Beach. The Building Homes for Heroes services veterans who have been injured while serving our Country. Thank you to our heroes  Army Specialist Alberto Diaz, USMC Sergeant Fernando Cabrera and Army Warrant Officer Aanthony Radetic. Thank you for your service and your sacrifices to our Country. The event was hosted by Fox News talk show host Geraldo Rivera and Singer Tony Orlando.
Urgent Care coming to the City of Doral

Commissioner Diaz is happy to report a much needed UHealth@Jackson Health Systems Urgent Care Center will be opening in the Doral Commons shopping center at 7400 NW 104th Avenue in the City of Doral in 2017. The 6,500 square-foot property will house both an urgent care center and a physician practice for specialty medical care. This will be the first Jackson facility to open in the Northwest Dade region and will ultimately support the more extensive clinical facilities being built at the new Jackson West campus in Doral. 
Build a Better Bathroom Rebates

Looking to improve your bathroom and save money? Miami-Dade County is offering toilet, showerhead and or faucet rebates. Single-family residential property owners or tenants, as well as multi-family property owners, may receive a $50 rebate with the purchase and installation of a WaterSense-certified High-Efficiency toilet. To qualify, the residential property must have been built prior to 1996. To apply for the rebates, click here .

NW 154th Street from Okeechobee Rd to NW 122nd Avenue and NW 122nd Avenue from NW 154th Street to dead end
This project has been initiated to improve the roadway surface and driving conditions. The scope of work includes the following: milling and resurfacing, adjustment of valve boxes and manholes, pavement markings and signage. Construction is expected to be completed October 2016.

NW 58th Street from NW 97th Avenue to NW 117th Avenue
Project will improve the roadway surface and driving conditions. The work will include milling and resurfacing, adjustment of valve boxes and manholes, ADA Ramps and connectors and pavement markings and signage. The project is expected to be completed September 2016.

NW 107th Avenue from NW 58th Street to NW 66th Street
Project will help with flooding and drainage improvements. The scope of the work consists of the construction of a storm drainage system, consisting of exfiltration trenches and solid pipe along with drainage inlets and storm manholes;as well as roadway restoration. Project is expected to be completed August 2016.

 On May 31, Commissioner Diaz congratulates a graduate at the
first graduating class of 2016 at Youth-Co-op Preparatory School.

  Commissioner Diaz at the June 1 ground breaking on NW 109 Avenue, which will connect 109 Avenue and Doral Blvd., providing another road alternative to residents. This new road has sidewalks, shared bicycle lanes and lighting.
 Commissioner Diaz attends the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's
Salute to Our Own Remembrance Ceremony on June 3.

As the Chairman of the Miami-Dade County's Military Affairs Board Commissioner Diaz
welcomes a German Military delegation of 100 officers from the Fuehrungsakademie
(Armed Forces Command & Staff College) on June 8.

As the Chairman of the International Trade Consortium Board Commissioner Diaz
meets with Consul General of China Li Qiangmin on June 21.

On June 21, Commissioner Diaz presents a proclamation to Korean War Veteran Ainslee Ferdie and Judge Jay Cristol proclaiming June 2016 Korean War Veterans Month in Miami-Dade County.

Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
