PARKING & SHUTTLE BUS INFO
ARRIVE EARLY! ARRIVE EARLY!
CARPOOL! CARPOOL! CARPOOL!
This section is a must read!
If we all follow some simple guidelines on race day like, CARPOOL whenever possible, obey the traffic signs, and use the large lots, espcially the HUGE POOL PARKING LOT, and take the shuttles vs trying to park wherever, then race day will be enjoyable for everyone.
In 2012, we are being asked again by the park to post "no parking signs" all along Pearce Mill Rd to help control traffic & parking. Therefore, please arrive early and use only designated parking lots.
Parking along Pierce Mill, especially in front of the Boathouse, interferes with safety of other runners and delays the shuttle busses.
Regardless of how other races work, including some of our own like The Spring Thaw, this event is so large, 2.5 times the ST, that we must follow the rules to keep everyone safe and allow the quick movement of over 2,300 race participants & spectators to the race site on a timely manner. Please be considerate and arrive early and use the shuttles.
We are adding 2 more busses this year for a total of 6 shuttles which will rotate around to the following lots:
Click here for a google map of key Race sites like parking & start finish areas
- Parking area #1: Pool lot- 400 spots -USE THIS FIRST -it offers the best chance. Last shuttle will pickup about 8:10 am. Located just off Backcock Road.
- Parking area #2: Ice Rink- 180 spots - With parking behind the ice rink off Kummer road and parking on Pierce Mill this is the 2nd largest lot near the boathouse. Last shuttle pick up about 8:10 am. On Pearce Mill Rd.
- Parking area #3: Spillway Lot - 150 spots - Located on Babcock at Pierce Mill this lot is only 0.6 miles from the start so you could walk or catch the shuttle.
- Parking area #4: Rose Barn: 120 spots- No Shuttle but a big lot that you should be aware if you arrive early! This will fill quickly and is not your best option, so park before you get here.
- Have a spouse or friend drop you off and save parking spaces.
We highly stress the need to arrive early and use the shuttle busses to get to the Boathouse or simply park at one of the outlying lots and walk in to the Boatouse. The walk will loosen your legs from the drive and prepare your muscles to perform their best.
ARRIVE EARLY! ARRIVE EARLY!
CARPOOL! CARPOOL! CARPOOL!
Shuttles will start at 6:30 am at the Pool parking lot, the Spillway lot and at the Ice Rink and will run continuosly until just before race time. They will begin running back to these lots beginning at 9:00am and the last run back to these lots will be at 2:00 pm which is 1-1/2 hours after the course closes. |

NEW FINISH LINE DESIGN
With 4 events going on simultaneously, we redesigned the finish area again in 2012 and will be adding very defined barriers to keep things moving smoothly, to keep the multiple events seperated better, and speed up the awards.
We will have volunteers directing you, plus multiple signs will be posted and the volunteers will be calling out instructions, (therefore keep your ipods off at the finish) so there should not be much issue.
The only time you will cross under a clock is when you FINISH. If you are still doing the 5 mile loops around the lake to complete your distance, you will use the lane closest to the grass and continue out and around the lake again.
This is how it works.
- Everyone does the orignal 5K around the ice rink then comes back to the Boathouse past the tennis courts.
- The 5K runners will split off to the far right and go under the finish banner
- ALL other runners will go through the middle mats.
- At end of 1st 5 Mile lake loop
- 8.1 Milers will split off to the far right and go under the finish banner.
- 1/2 marathoners & 30K runners will go to the left lane and continue around the lake again.
- At end of the 2nd 5 Mile lake loop
- 1/2 Marathoners will split off to the far right and go under the finish banner
- 30K Runners will go the left lane and continue around the lake again
- At end of 3rd 5 Mile lake loop, all 30K runners will finish to the far right under the finish banner.

FYI, we have the races sequentially coded as well as color coded on the bibs, so your race bib MUST BE ON THE FRONT OF YOUR BODY AND VISIBLE to help us direct you properly.

MAP LINKS
Use the following links here or at www.justashortrun.net to get directions to packet pickup, the parking lots for the race and the race start locations.
JASR 1/2 Marathon Course - 8.1 Mile is just one less loop of the lake and 5K is the first 5K of the 1/2 marathon course.
30K Course Map - This map shows all but the last loop around the lake. The main difference from the 1/2 marathon is the start, so pay attention to that portion.

BAG DROP
A secure bag drop will be available outside the North Park Boathouse for participants to leave a change of clothing, or other post-race needs. It will be in an enclosed tent located outside this year. Look for our large 13' high Bag Drop banner
Please put all your belonging in a bag, ensure it will stay closed and CLEARLY mark the bag with your race bib number and your name if possible. Volunteers will assist with the collection and will retrieve your bags after the race.
Please do not place valuables in these bags. Although we will have volunteers to watch over them, we suggest you leave the valuables locked in your car. We are not responsible for any valuables left in bags. |

PACE TEAMS
To help with the start, Jim Crist and his team will once again be our pacers for the Half Marathon & 30K. Please line up with the signs which they will be holding at the start area of the half to help keep the runners organized by pace per mile. Faster to the front, slower to the back. With 2,300 runners expected, lining up correctly with your pace will help smooth out the start.
If you are a new or inexperienced distance racer, pacing teams will help you finish much stronger as many new runners go out too fast and crash. The pacers are human metronomes and will help you achieve your goals
Pace times cover 70% of the runners in each long race and are as follows:
Half Marathon: Finish times 1:40, 1:50. 2:00,2:10, 2:20, 2:30
30k: 7:00 min per mile, 8:00 min per mile, 9:00 min per mile, 10:00 min per mile

ELECTRONIC TIMING CHIPS FOR 2012
The race will once again use The Runners High timing company which will utilize electronic chip timing to ensure accuracy and speed for an event this size. We will have both start and finish mats for all distances and will have a split time provided for the 5K, then for each 5 mile loop you complete until finished. We will use disposable timing chips from ChampionChip.
The chip is a small electroinc device which must be attached to your shoe which tracks your time via "electronic" mats at the finish line. The chips will be attached to your bib number when you pick it up during packet-pickup Wed. thru Friday or race morning and must be laced onto your shoe prior to the start. They must be on the foot to work. No chip, no official time.
HOW TO USE/ATTACH THE CHIP TO YOUR SHOE LACES
- This is a new single use Champion Chip.
- Simply attach the chip by lacing it into your shoe laces.
- The chip must lay FLAT on your foot to register properly.
- This chip will only work for the Just A Short Run. Do not use it for any future event
-
We will not need to collect these at the finish which will speed up the finish line. -
However, we do want to recycle the chips and will collect them at Elite Runners & Walkers where they will be worth 10% off future purchases thru April 30, 2012.

|
30K START
You will begin in the Boathouse parking lot area as we did in 2010 & 2011, whereas the rest of the participants begin at the tennis courts.
However, you will then go out the FRONT of the Boathouse lot, turn left up the hill on Pierce Mill and subsequently merge into the race field at Pierce Mill and Lakeshore.
We will again use a chip start for the 30K and begin the event, 6 minutes ahead of the main field so that you merge into the runners at about the same pace. (This is 1 minute earlier than last year due to feedback). Although you start .5 miles further back than the main field, once you hit the 1 mile mark on the 5K course, your splits will be the same for all the mile marks after. |
|
AWARDS
Awards will be done after each race is completed. Raffle prizes will be given out randomly by the DJ once event participants begin finishing. All unclaimed prizes will be put back in for the final drawing.
Grand prizes, including, a condo in Ocean City, MD, a weekend at Seven Springs, and more will be drawn after ALL runners finish. Winner must be present for the large prizes at the end.
RACE PHOTOS
Please help us by making sure your bib number is prominently worn on the FRONT of your body and on OUTSIDE of all clothing.
This is not only for identification for the phtographer, but more importantly, it helps us direct you to the proper finish line as the numbers are color coded and sequentially assigned by race. |

| Other FAQ's
Question: Can I run with my child in a jogging stroller
Answer: Unfortunately the answer is no. Due to the size of the event, and the tighness of the course, our insurance rules, and most importantly for the safety of your little ones we politely ask that you do not run with jogging strollers. We do however encourage you to have a friend or relative bring them to the finish area to cheer you on.
Question: Can I bring my dog?
Answer: Unfortunately the answer is no. With close to 2700 people, runners and spectators and volunteers, in the confined start/finish spaces, and on the course, even the best of friends can get nervous and not act normally. In addition, for liability reasons we cannot allow this for the safety of other runners. Finally, it is just courteous, as not all people are dog lovers and may even be terrified of dogs and we would ask that you help us make everyone's day enjoyable and leave your four-legged friend at home.
Question: Can I wear headphones?
Answer: The answer is yes. We understand music is a great motivator. However, as the race director I politely ask that your music not be playing at the start or as you approach the finish so you can hear volunteer instructions. Also please keep the level down on the course so you can hear other runners and our aid station volunteers which helps keep everyone safe! Runners have been injured due to headphone wearing participants not hearing instructions so please be careful if you use music.
FINAL QUESTION:When should I arrive?
ANSWER: AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE and definitely prior to 7:30. It will take time to park and get to the start so leave plenty of time. Plus we still ahve to get everyone lined up at the various positions. Please help us make the day perfect!

NEW SHORT SIZE EXCHANGE ZONE
Since we had to order the shorts months out to get the great price from Asics, we did an educated guess and we did not get it 100% right. Since we sold out of some sizes, many runners have requested changing sizes which we cannot do till all packets are picked up. It would not be fair to those who registered early to ensure their size.
However, on RACE DAY we will have an EXCHANGE ZONE after the race. So please bring the sizes you want to exchange out, and IF we have your size left, we will swap it with you for the one you don't want.
We are not ordering extras, just giving away the stuff that does not get picked up.
FUI, we will also bring the leftovers from years past and you can buy those for only $5 or even exchange this years for a different size from prior years. Lots of options. |
