Jan 30, 2017      Finger Lakes Connected
I met a nice couple on a sunrise hike I took with Maverick over the weekend. No human names or particulars were exchanged but sometimes all that stuff isn't necessary. Their faces and energy are in my mind though today. I just told them they had a good looking dog (Tucker) and they told me the story. They weren't going to get a dog but they had a great sales pitch from the rescue place in Kentucky: "We have to kill him if you don't take him". When they got him he wouldn't go in the house and kept looking at their feet expecting to get kicked. He wouldn't eat from the bowl because he was used to just finding scraps outside. They said that Tucker actually rescued THEM because when you find a creature that is learning and delighting in the simplicity of JUST BEING it makes all of our petty problems so trivial. Food, clothing (for us), and shelter. Everything and Anything above and beyond should be treasured. Just like Tucker found a new life, we have new days. Every single morning is a fresh new start to not look back at past mistakes or trials, but to bask in the glory of today intead. The simple act of BEING is a gift that we just get every day. It is a present that is just gifted to us. THE Present. Enjoy the moments. I'm rooting for you! :)

Museum to Host National Monometer Exhibit
In conjunction with our 2018 WWI Theme the Historical Society will present a unique automotive technology exhibit dating to the early 1900s.
What are Motometers?
Throughout the 1920s monometers or radiator-mounted engine temperature gauges presided on the front of almost every automobile, truck and airplane.  Your automobile's engine temperature gauge, "Check Engine" light and hood ornament trace their origin back to these devices.
Internationally known automotive industry historian, artifact preservationist and Canandaigua resident Francis Clax is loaning his extensive monometer collection to the Ontario Historical Society for an exclusive exhibition to be held between February 2nd and September 8th, 2017.
This exhibition will provide an unprecedented look into the 100-year plus history of these unique artifacts and the early automobile industry. An opening reception is scheduled on Friday February 2, 2018.

FLCC to mark 50th anniversary on Feb. 1

Finger Lakes Community College will mark 50 years of classes on Thursday, Feb. 1, with the announcement of a time capsule, the release of a commemorative book, and a gallery exhibit of works by FLCC's first art faculty members and their students.

Community College of the Finger Lakes, the college's original name, began full-time credit-bearing classes on Feb. 1, 1968.

The Feb. 1 celebration, called "From the Storefronts to Lincoln Hill: Celebrating 50 Years at FLCC," is a series of events at the main campus between 2 and 6:30 p.m. All are free and open to the public. Visitors are asked to RSVP at [email protected][email protected]. (If the college closes for winter weather, the event will be rescheduled for Feb. 8).

The event features the release of a full-color 50th anniversary commemorative book titled, "This Bold Decision: The Story of Finger Lakes Community College." The title is a reference to the decision to create the college and is taken from the inauguration speech of the college's first president, Roy Satre.

Stay Healthy this Season

Resist the urge to touch your face. Occasionally rubbing your eyes or scratching your nose makes you 41% more likely to develop frequent upper respiratory infections, says a Journal of Occupational Health study. (On average, people touch their nose about four times an hour).
The Fix: Every time you feel the need to reach for your face, take a sip of water, clasp your hands together or do a few shoulder roles. The key to changing an undesirable behavior is to substitute it with something beneficial or neutral. Not aware that you are doing this? Ask a loved one to call you out when it happens.

This health tip is brought to you by Canandaigua The Medicine Shoppe, Canandaigua, NY.
