The racing world is in mourning after the loss of Justin Wilson in a freak accident last weekend at Pocono. Tributes from competitors and others who knew Wilson are flooding in to Facebook, Twitter and other media outlets. By all accounts Justin was a wonderful human being, a loyal family man and a fierce but fair competitor.

Justin leaves behind his wife Julia and two small daughters. The Wilson Children's Fund has been established to assist Justin's girls. Send donations to:

According to Wilson's brother Stefan, organ donations have helped to save six lives. A generous gift from a hero and his family which will be appreciated for years to come.

Sunday's incident has again brought to the forefront the issue of driver safety in open wheel and open cockpit race cars. Racing will never be completely safe but there is always room for improvement. Canopies are an option but present another set of problems when quick extraction or fire are issues. Closed cockpits do not guarantee safety, as we saw with Memo Gidley's accident at Daytona a couple of years ago.

There was an interesting concept discussed on Motorsport.com today that's being tested in Formula One. We hope Indycar is watching.

In the mean time, our thoughts and prayers go out to Justin Wilson's family and colleagues as well as everyone who straps themselves into a racing car to do battle.
