Kindergarten Connections
February 9th, 2017

Dear Families,
At the mid-year address last week, Dr. Pernambuco-Wise reflected on where we've been and where we're going. This is a great moment for us to pause and consider the same concept. In a nutshell, together we have learned to...
- read, using picture clues and letter knowledge, and then sharing our ideas about the text with friends
- write, becoming authors in our own right, eager to share our thoughts in pictures and words, writing true stories from our lives
- do math, articulating our math thinking aloud, playing math games, solving problems and writing our knowledge on the page
- act as scientists, observing and questioning and wondering about the world around us
- collaborate, reading the faces of our friends to gauge emotions, working together to negotiate conflicts, understanding the size and scope of a problem to determine a solution that fits, thinking flexibly, perservering, and using self-control
Next up, we will further challenge and excite the children with creative, innovative learning and thinking. We'll become better, stronger, and more confent, readers, writer, mathematicians, scientists and friends. We're looking forward to continuing this journey together.

What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Writer's Workshop
We've been practicing adding speech bubbles to our writing, to make our pieces come to life!
|
Social Studies/Friendship Workshop
This week, we formally introduced the concept of self-control.
|
|
Math
We've had fun playing games with 10-frames that help us subitize
|
Reader's Workshop
We've been working towards being independent "superheroes" during reader's workshop, by being gentle, quiet, working, and our own bosses (not the bosses of each other!)
|
|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
-
Self-control -
What does that mean? What do marshmallows have to do with it?
- Stretching-out words - What do you do when you want to write a word? What tools can you use?
- 10 Frames - What are those? How to they help with subitizing? Also, what's subitizing?

|
If you've got these items around the house, please bring them in!
- Worn our button-down shirts (adult-sized) to use as smocks for painting
|
|
Valentine's Day is just around the corner. We will have mini classroom celebrations on Tuesday, February 14th. Children should bring 11 valentines for their classmates. Please leave the "to" section blank. This will make distributing valentines a breeze!
We switch out sight words on Friday mornings. On Thursday nights, please leave any mastered words loose in your child's sight word holder.
