Last year, Kahal B'Raira, the Greater Boston area's only humanistic Jewish congregation, turned forty years old. We celebrated by honoring our founders and our leaders and by acknowledging our achievements and our growth. We hosted festive occasions, created a time capsule, and launched a special campaign to ensure KB's future.

We also took this opportunity to look forward, envision where we want KB to go and imagine who we want to be as a community: more secure, more diverse, more accessible, more active, and better funded.  We have already begun to see this future take shape. We have expanded our outreach efforts.  We have added many member led social activities.  We have welcomed six new families into the congregation. We have implemented adult education classes. We have launched a new protocol to ensure that our congregation is accessible to all. We have significantly grown our program for eighth and ninth graders.

From KB's beginning, the hard work and generosity of its members has enabled this community to exist, grow, and thrive. The annual appeal is a critical component of our annual budget. The money it raises supports our Sunday School, where more than 60 students in grades pre-K through 9 learn about Jewish history, culture, and ethics. It supports our recently expanded b'nai mitzvah program, which currently includes 10 families celebrating this milestone.

Your gifts to our annual appeal also help fund our Sunday and Shabbat services, holiday celebrations, Sunday adult programs and committees. The Social Action Committee organizes blood drives, provides volunteers for an organic farm that grows food for food pantries, and coordinates holiday gift giving for children in foster care. We are collaborating with Boston synagogues in refugee relief efforts. Our Chesed (or Caring) Committee is always there to provide emotional support (and food!) for congregants facing such difficulties as illness or a death in the family.
What we do at KB comes with a cost. KB members pay dues and tuition, and volunteer countless hours. But funding all our activities, keeping dues and tuition affordable, and making KB membership available to those who would otherwise find it out of reach requires more. We cannot do all these things without additional support from you. Your gifts to the annual appeal help KB to thrive.
As we begin to look ahead toward our congregation's golden anniversary and all the exciting opportunities that await, we urge you to fulfill Kahal B'Raira's promise this year by contributing to the annual appeal.
