Director's Note

The Katherine Thomas School (KTS) has had various interactive and educational special events recently, combining education with serious fun. History and facts were learned by both students and faculty/staff, and equally as important as learning, great memories were made! We could not have had the success we experienced if it weren't for our dedicated KTS community. Here's to more education, fun, and memories made in Spring 2018 and beyond!

Welcome to the Rainforest

A one week "intersession" between semesters brought the high school students to Brazil! Under the tutelage of Artist-in-Residence, Skher Brown, students learned about Capoeira Angola (Brazilian dance-fight art form) and related music and culture. In the classrooms, they explored Brazil's geography, learned about the Rainforest (and created a stunning paper one on the wall near the high school kitchen, picture on right), danced the Samba, used Google maps to determine how to travel from here to Brazil, and made their own chocolates.
Best Buddies

Student volunteers from Quince Orchard High School have come to KTS through the Best Buddies program. Best Buddies is the world's largest organization dedicated to ending the social physical, and economic isolation of individuals with disabilities. Friendship and fun is in the air at these amazing meetups!

Since the fall, the students and Buddies have enjoyed monthly group activities and weekly individual contact. The students have built gingerbread houses, gone bowling, met at the local Krispy Kreme for a Valentines activity, and worked out through Zumba. Upcoming events include a kickball event in honor of Earth Day and a jumping end of year party at Sky Zone!

Middle School Fun in DC!

The KTS middle school enjoyed an exciting day on February 14th with a field trip to the  The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts  for a play and time at the  National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution.  An Epic day was had by all!
