Kardel Newsletter, Events & Programs
Congratulations to our New Managers!

As we wished Janice, Terry, and Vivian a happy retirement in February we welcomed some new members to Kardel's Management Team in March:  Chantal Reid at Henry House, Kris Gower at Maryland House, Tara Harrison at Hillside House, and Jenn Noullette at Sentinel House.  Brandi Harrison moved from Sentinel House over to Amelia House.
Welcome and thank you to everyone for taking on the task of managing our very busy homes!
"Rights Project" at Kardel

In February we launched some focus groups to come together to discuss rights and what they mean for each person.  We gained some valuable insight from meeting with individuals in many of our programs; Home Share, Individual Support Network, Futures Club, and Paskin House. This poster is the result of those meetings.

Next up: an app that will be available on your computer, tablet or phone.

We'd like to thank Sharon Sinclair for helping to facilitate the meetings, and all those who participated in the focus groups....we couldn't have done it without your valuable input!

Paskin News

Iggy started a sledge hockey program at Juan De Fuca Recreation Centre. It's in the grassroots stages right now, and they are trying to determine if it's worth the arena funding as a regular program next season.

He was a natural almost immediately and had a total blast while on the ice. I don't think the smile left his face the whole time he was playing!

Here is a photo of his first go at it:

Raise the Rates; Leave our Buss Pass Alone

On March 2, participants in Futures Club and our Home Share Program joined over 300 people on the grounds of the Legislature.  They were rallying against the recent announcement that the BC government will increase disability rates by $77-a-month, but also introduce a $52 monthly bus pass fee.  People with disabilites won't pocket much of the increase because starting in September they'll now have to pay to take the bus.
Home Share News

On March 15th Kardel hosted an inter-agency information session with David Marr from the Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT).  Home Share Coordinators from nine different agencies attended the info session to clarify the role of the PGT and to learn about topics such as:
  • How to Assist an Adult who is Abused, Neglected or Self-Neglecting
  • Personal Planning Options; Power of Attorney, Committee, and Representation Agreements
  • BC's Adult Guardianship Laws
  • Assessment and Investigations Services

If you'd like more information about any of these topics, please visit the PGT Website

Sentinel News

Vicki has a new pen pal!  She began corresponding with the young girl Kardel sponsors in Kenya.  Mweni lives with her mother and father in a small hut on the plains of Miatsani. Mweni was born with a disability in her spine, one hand, and one leg and she attends school in her village.

Vicki purchased a card to send to Mweni for her birthday and wrote her a letter full of good wishes.
WorkBC Job Fair

On March 16, Kardel's Human Resources Team joined over 40 employers to participate in a job fair sponsored by GT Hiring Solutions. The job fair was a key opportunity for job seekers to learn more about Kardel, get their questions answered, and market their skills to our hiring team.
