Dementia Workshop
On September 8th, Kardel partnered with seven agencies in the Victoria area to offer a workshop for over 50 staff regarding the area of Dementia.  The workshop was facilitated by Dr Isabelle Grenon who  worked for VIHA's Developmental Disability Mental Health Team for 7 and a half years and has expertise in this area.  Dr Grenon also has 24 years' experience working with people with intellectual  and developmental disabilities starting in 1992 with United Cerebral Palsy, and then the state of New York before coming to BC.  The workshop was very informative and engaging as case studies were used to generate discussion as attendees shared experiences.  We hope to offer further workshops in the future for the benefit of the people we support.

Lakes Parksville Holiday

Early this September, Tanya, Brent, Hanne and
Mavis went on a three-day
holiday and stayed at Ocean Trails Resort in Parksville. They enjoyed the Wildlife Sanctuary in Errington, the Paws for a Cause Concert, the beaches, and the pool at the resort. They dined out continuously, ate a lot of ice cream and spent a lot of money. They also enjoyed the sea planes on the Nanaimo Waterfront.

Lakes Road House News

Tanya and Hanne participated in the annual "Walk of Nations" to promote peace and understanding among all world cultures. The walk is started with First Nations Peace Prayer with groups walking from the north and south, meeting at the bridge over the Cowichan River where they exchanged four colored symbolic ties representing all cultures as One Family and Mother Earth and Father Sky. First Nations drummers sang prayers as the ties were attached to the bridge. The procession then walked through Duncan to VIU and joined the "One World" Festival hosted by the Intercultural society. There were many booths set up by community groups, cultural food trucks, and raffles. Cultural music and dancing followed. Tanya and Hanne really enjoyed all the activities. Tanya dressed in her culture's kilt. We all participated in a huge circle dance and everyone joined hands, (Hanne did not know she was holding hands with the mayor of North Cowichan). Signs of Love, Peace, Trust and "We Are One Family" were the themes of the day

This commitment indicates to the community that our organization is a welcoming place, supportive of diversity and will assist victims of discrimination.  As part of our ongoing training, Kardel is now incorporating the new Diversity & Inclusion Training for all staff who join the organization.  The goal of the Safe Harbour Individual Training is to support individuals in the workforce, or who are entering the workforce, in building their awareness of diversity and the implications of diversity and to gain knowledge to foster inclusion in workplace settings with their co-workers and the people we support.
