KAREN O'CONNOR STANDING FOR ELECTION AS FEI ATHLETE REPRESENTATIVE

FINAL VOTING CLOSES MIDNIGHT CENTRAL EUROPEAN TIME (6PM EASTERN)

The Plains, Virginia, USA. July 16, 2014

Mutli-Olympian Karen O'Connor is standing for election to the Fdration Equestre Internationale (FEI) as the Eventing Athlete Representative.  O'Connor was elected to the second and final voting phase, which closes on July 16th midnight Central European Time (6pm EDT). This is the first time in the history of the FEI that the athletes themselves have the opportunity to vote for their FEI Athlete Representatives.

The election is taking place via a secure online voting platform at this link on the FEI website: https://www.fei.webvote.fr/ns/index_timeout.jsp.

"I am very excited about the initiative taken by the FEI in an attempt to have a more comprehensive global voice by the athletes. I look forward to working closely with all FEI Groups and bringing forward the unified athletes wishes to the technical committee.  I'm committed to being the voice of all riders worldwide and representing the issues being addressed on their behalf," said O'Connor.

O'Connor has extensive experience on governing bodies within the US; principally the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and United States Eventing Association (USEA) that would be invaluable to her as an FEI Athlete Representative. (See below for full list).

"My seated positions in governance have given me an extraordinary opportunity to understand the workings of a large organization from the smallest of the standing committees to the executive level. As a professional athlete, I believe I have a clear understanding of the athlete's needs, while at the same time I am well aware how to work within the parameters of a large multi-disciplined organization," added O'Connor.

According to the FEI, the athletes are expected to play a key role in the governance of equestrian sport, acting as a voice for all athletes and actively shaping the FEI's global development since the successful candidates will become important ambassadors for equestrian sport.

FEI registered athletes, aged 18 years and over, and who are included on their respective Ranking Lists from 31 December 2013, are eligible to vote for their Athlete Representative.

The appointed FEI Athlete Representatives in each discipline will also form the FEI Athletes' Committee when the FEI's Technical Committees require feedback and proactive input on areas relevant to all FEI athletes.
