Kate Petley: New Monoprints
Colorado artist Kate Petley spent 8 days in August creating monoprints at Manneken Press.  Though this was Petley's first foray into printmaking, the results are stunning; vivid fields of color overlay linear, stratified marks, evoking a sense of folded space and geological process.

As a starting point, Petley made brush drawings in ink on translucent film. The drawings were etched into copper plates via direct gravure, an adaptation of the traditional photogravure technique.  The etched plates were printed and combined with relief-printed colors and hand-cut stencils, sometimes in many layers, to create a series of related but unique impressions. The 21 monoprints are in three series, titled "Corner", "Flap" and "Once Or Twice", and range in size from 20 " x 21 " to 22 " x 29 ".

Petley writes:

"Over time, the underlying focus of my work has become the possibility and meaning of the mark itself. By distancing the brushstroke with a controlled process such as printmaking, the immediacy and emotional connection is turned on its head. The implication of that distanced mark is everything. Sight, dimension, and duration come together in layered constructions that mirror the fragmented arrangements of everyday life. Shapes push against our eyes. Movement is primary and deep, flat space is powered by pure color."
