Leaders of District 4-C6
District Governor Jan Miller
DG Jan Miller
President Dr.  Jitsuhiro  Yamada  said ,   as we enter our second year of our Centennial Celebration, we will continue working toward our goal of serving 100 million people through our Centennial Service Challenge.  He also will continue to reward Lions and Lion Clubs for adding new members to their own clubs.   As Lions, we have a unique opportunity to help advance the dignity of mankind through service!

As of today the district is down 34 members, but I know the district will be up to where we need to be in no time!

LET'S BRING IN SOME NEW CLUBS!
I will be walking the streets of Pacific Grove the 28th, 29th and 30th! I would like to have some Guiding Lions walk with me to recruit some new Lions for Pacific Grove and other Lions as well!  Lion Sheila would like to build up her club, so let's help her, please!   October 1, 2 and possibly the 3rd again, we need Guiding Lions and others to help the district start a club in East Alisal, Salinas. We did this in Gonzales and it was a great success, so why not do it again!

Worldwide Week of Service in Sight  is the week of October 4th to the 10 th .   Help to eliminate preventable blindness and improve sight in our communities.  Have vision screenings and awareness campaigns.

October 8 th  is World Sight Day.  Plan your project so it's on this day, then promote it and report it to  MyLCI .   Some of the ways you can do this is by doing an eye health and safety presentation; arrange a n  activity for the visually impaired; organize transportation service to medical and other appointments for persons who are blind or visually impaired.    These are just a few ideas.

City of Hope is introducing three new fellowship awards just for Lions Clubs members!  All donations will go toward the Lions Clubs International Family Center for 2015-2016!  You might think about these awards for special recognitions to special lions!
  • Lion of Hope Fellow Award - $1,000.  This recipient will receive a   plaque award and pin.  For someone who exemplifies the honest and ethical conduct defined by the four core values, Integrity, Accountability, Teamwork and Excellence.
  • Kay K. Fukushima Fellow Award - $1,500.   You  will receive a plaque with your name on the Japanese Garden Wall.  PIP Kay encouraged us to fund the Lions Clubs International Family Center and in 2009,  PIP Kay endorsed the $1 Million renovation project of the Family Center to assist patients and families at City of Hope.
  • Samuel H. Golter Fellow Award - $2,500.  This recipient will receive a plaque award and their name on the Path of Roses in the Rose Garden.  This man was one of the founders of City of Hope.  He established the phrase, "There is no profit in curing the body if in the process we destroy the soul."
Next Cabinet Meeting is November 14 th  and it will be held at Palmer College of Chiropractic
  • We will have drawings for baskets.  Please bring items, valued at $25.00 for this!  Thank you!
  • Marina Lions is joining the Marina Kiwanis Club in collecting new or slightly used shoes.  All types!  Tie all pairs together or use rubber bands.  Bring them to the next cabinet meeting and the shoes will be turned in to Marina Lions!
  • Scales of Justice Lions is starting their One Warm Coat Drive.  Please bring your gently used, clean, warm coats for their collection barrel.
Don't forget about Ronald McDonald House!  Bring to the cabinet meeting items of non - perishable foods , batteries (AA, C, D, 9 Volt), can openers, coffee grinders, coffee makers, deodorant, disposable food containers, DVD players, DVD movies, G and PG-13, hair dryers, hand mixers, handheld games, irons, laundry baskets, toasters, etc.,   We don't focus on these too much, but they are needed!

Also, t hank  you to those who brought clothes for the Philippines!  If anyone else has clothes, please bring them to the cabinet meeting also.  They are still in need!

Last, I want to thank our Zone Chairs Lion Melinda, Lion Aimee,  Lion  Mari for having their Zone Meetings already!  GREAT!  Thank you also to Lions Donna, Hope, Cynthia, Steve, and Patrick for having their meetings scheduled!
First VDG Barbara Chamberlain
The path to our vision for our club has so many distractions. Sometimes it is so difficult to stick to the vision of serving in our community, but if we are not sidetracked by all the side roads along the way we will at least be moving forward.

The first wrong turn is Complaint Alley. It's a biggie, too, and can stop forward movement completely. Since I find it impossible to change anyone's personality, try to set up some rules. My personal favorite is my mother's - "He who complains gets the job." Ask your complainer friend to always bring a solution when they bring a complaint. If the person used  time and energy spent on complaining to solve the problem or look for positives their own  lives as well as the club's, the dynamics in all of your meetings will improve.

Accentuate the Positive
There is an old song  "Accentuate the positive." Do that to get back on the main road to your vision. Remember the  positive projects and events Lions hold in their communities.  Remember the Pride of Lions.

Second VDG Bob Stewart
It is good to be a Lion!

My aim is to remain very actively engaged personally this year in District participation as your 2nd VDG. Any activity, assistance, or need of any kind at the Club or multiple Club level, especially hands-on project work, please email me in advance as an invite!

This is to share information and request your attention regarding two of the functions where I represent your interest at the Multiple District 4 (MD4) statewide level:

Lions Rose Parade Float

Each of the 2nd VDGs in the 15 statewide Districts are required to raise money for the Lions Rose Parade Float. The goal for our District 4-C6 is $2500, and I am asking each club for $100. Thus far we have generous donations from Carmel Host, SJ Japantown, Santa Clara Host, Monterey Peninsula Host, and Freedom Lions Club. Thank you! For the remaining clubs, please expect that I will tenaciously appeal to you toward achieving our District's fair share monetary deliverable. Please help!
  • A recent survey shows that our Lions Rose Parade float is ranked #1 as the leading reason for Lions membership retention and garnering new membership. Think Pride.
  • The theme of this year's float is "Camp's for All Abilities" and its focus is Lions supported summer camps for children with diabetes. This really hits home with our District and is spot-on to what we support!
  • 100% of the many hundreds of hours of labor in physically covering our Lions Float organically with flowers and seeds is by Leos Club members!
  • The 2017 LCI Centennial Float is already in design. Think Huge ... twice as high and twice as long as any prior Lions Rose Parade. We will win the Best Float award!
Please make your Club or personal check donation to: Lions Float, Inc., and mail to Lion Bob Stewart, 4411 Yardarm Court, Soquel, CA 95073.

MD4 Long Range Committee

As 2nd VDG, I am one of your representatives at the Multiple District 4 Council of Governors (COG) level. Each COG member is required to participate on one of various statewide committees. I was accepted to the Long Range Planning Committee, which is the one I wanted. As your new member, I helped this summer to author a Long Range Planning Guide, which is a tutorial for presentation, interaction, and training at the LCI District and Club level. (What is a Long Range Plan, why is it important, how to create, including a boilerplate example.) Expect to hear more on this from me in the coming months, as this very important training program becomes approved at the MD4 level and then is introduced to each District in California.

As always, your Lions comments and feedback are encouraged and most welcome.

What a joy to be a Lion!

We are given so many opportunities to be there for others that it is truly a gift to be able to serve our communities. To work with other Lions who are enthusiastic and energized to do something for someone other than themselves is another amazing connection we receive by being a Lion.

All the resources we have in our District is truly remarkable when you see different projects coming together, some that have never been tried before and others that are so good they should continue. Chartering two new clubs this past year, the Gonzales Lions Club and our newest club, the San Jose Downtown Lions Club, has been so fun and such a gift for these two different communities.

Thank you for the adventure to serve as your 4-C6 District Governor this past 2014-15 year, and I hope you will continue to reach out to others who still do not know what we are or what we do as Lions. Remember the leadership opportunities are all around us in our Lions organization. Consider stepping out of your comfort zone and taking on a new role. Consider some of the great leadership classes that are offered both on line and through the District, Multiple, and Lions Clubs International. You will never regret learning more.

Recently, I have been honored to be chosen by Lions Clubs International as the North America New Club Development Consultant from California. I am heading for training in Oak Brook, Chicago the end of Sept and will find out exactly what that means. It does sound like a wonderful opportunity to share with others what Lions are all about and how to keep growing and moving forward as we celebrate our 100 year Centennial Celebration. "Where There is a Need, There is a Lion".

Go 4-C6 and Go Lions!

An Interview with
PCC Chuck Hart

How did you learn about Lions?

A year after moving to San Jose, I was invited to a Kiwanis Club meeting.  I went to several meetings and the members seemed to enjoy but did not accomplish anything.  I was later invited to the Cambrian Park Lions Club, which was composed of educators who wanted to do something of lasting value in their community. I later transferred to Cupertino Host Lions Club but enjoyed both clubs very much.

Why did you decide to become a Lion?

I found that Lions Clubs offered many challenges but also many volunteers to make new ideas in community service very rewarding as well as enjoyable. I found that becoming involved with Lions Club activities was truly inspiring and pleasant and a good place to form life-long friendships with people of similar motivations.  It was, in reality, a world-wide organization with unlimited goals and personal feeling of accomplishment to all active participants.

What has been your best experience so far as a Lion?

My best experience in being a Lion was being elected District Governor of District 4-C6 in June 1980 and being elected as Chairman of the Council of Governors of Multiple District 4, California and Nevada, in August 1980
and having exposure to Lions all over the world in a very real way. Arlene and I were invited to a lot of places and met many people, which we enjoyed doing.  My biggest success as a Lion has been to start, with PDG Lucas Zaballos, the A.J. Robinson Foundation, which now owns four vision cameras in addition to the health screening van and is in use all over the district for screening health, vision, and hearing.

What advice or tips would you offer to new Lions?

Faith, Hope and Love.  Follow these to make decisions and choices of involvement to fulfill your ideals.  It makes for a happy life.  Become truly involved with club community activities.  Freely contribute your time, talents and some of your treasury to the success of your club's community projects.  Seek office in one or more District activities that are of significance to you.  Enjoy the fruits of each of your efforts to make your city a better city as a result of your personal involvement.  Create ideas to reward others in your club for the good works that they accomplish.

Have you accomplished something not related to Lions that you would like to share?

I was Scout Master of a Scout Troop having 75 Scouts and 3 assistant Scout Masters.  Seven of the Scouts became Eagle Scouts.  Each month the entire troop would camp out and hike 25 miles on a historical trail and engage in scouting activities.

I have, over the years, collected human eyes to be transported to San Francisco for use to repair damaged corneas.  Many hospitals called upon me to pick them up and deliver them  to a surgeon who restored vision, at no charge.  Mr. Bill Anders, who was General Manager of GE Nuclear Energy,  a warded me a company-wide award for special civic volunteer activities.

For many years, I have visited people in my church who were very ill but wanted to receive communion and share their thoughts with a lay person from their regular Parish Church.  This was, perhaps, the most rewarding to me but, more important, they could be in close touch with the spiritual activities which were a very important part of their lives.  I was invited to lead memorial services at funerals, conducted Last Rights at cemeteries, and performed several weddings.

I was manager of an engineering company that designed nuclear controls for reactors and talked to people all over the world.  I was a long distance runner and followed the theme throughout my life of trying to do something I've never done before, and succeeding.  I ran four marathons, 15 Bay to Breakers, and 10,000-meter runs all over.

"Elderly folks MEMORY: The Explanation Scientists believe brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.

Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more and considered having exceptional intellect.

Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is not a memory problem; it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise. SO THERE!

Now, when I reach for a word or a name, I won't excuse myself by saying "I'm having a senior moment". Now, I'll say: "My start up disk is full!" I have more friends I should send this to, but right now I can't remember their names. So, please forward this to your friends; they may be my friends too.

E-mail Tips
  • If you get a message from your bank or eBay about a problem with your account, it's probably a "phishing" scam. It's a fake, designed to lure you into typing your name and password so the bad guys can have it. Delete it. If you're concerned, visit the institution's Web site in your browser by typing in its address (like Citibank.com) - not by clicking the link in e-mail.
  • Before you pass on any amazing item you get by e-mail - Obama's a Muslim, the bubble boy wants greeting cards, the Nieman-Marcus $400 cookie recipe - first check it out at Snopes.com, the world clearinghouse for Internet scams and rumors.
  • If a blue underlined link shows up in an e-mail message, you can mouse over it without clicking to see what Web site it plans to open.
  • If you get a message from someone you know that relates a horror story about being mugged in England (and needing you to wire money immediately), delete it. It's a popular scam - even if it's the correct e-mail address of someone you know.

Frances Maglalang, Chair

TWO weeks left to order your FREE Student Speaker Contest Club Packet! Free until October 1st.  Click here for online ordering.

For orders placed on October 2nd or later: clubs will need to call MD4, Executive Administrator Cass Cara, to get a Student Speaker Contest Packet, (late fee of $25.00)  800-546-6634.

Check Out the MD4lions.org LIBRARY which has your updated certificates, suggestions, worksheets, and handbook for 2015-2016.

Don't forget to start looking for your venue place to hold your contest. Some venue places get booked up a year in advance. Some have a fee, some don't.  Do any of the clubs have any suggestions regarding venue places? Never held a Speakers Contest before and need clarification on what you are reading in the handbook? Just ask - the sooner the better.

There is a Facebook Lions Club Presidents  page so Presidents, Past Presidents and Vice Presidents can share ideas on current projects and ideas. Great place to ASK.  It's a closed group, not public, and you need to request to join.

Message from Cass:
We will be stuffing packets and mailing them the week after October 1.  Only one packet is mailed to a club. All the Zone, Region, District and Area packets will be brought to the Fall meeting in Burlingame, November 6-8, 2015, and handed to the District Governor to bring to a cabinet meeting.

Thank you all for contributing to this issue.  Please send me articles for future issues that would be of interest to the Lions of District 4-C6.  We don't have a Club Events section, so flyers or information advertising your events and fundraisers should be posted on the District website.

Newsworthy articles about your club's activities will be considered.   Be sure to make the articles short and concise as people tend not to read much more than a couple of paragraphs in an electronic newsletter.
