Dear Friends,

Lizzy rescued from hoarding situation

When the call came about an eviction about to happen where dozens of animals were being kept in a small apartment in NYC, we knew immediately that this was a hoarding situation, and we knew that we had to reach out and help.
As the situation unfolded, the reality set in that there were possibly upwards of 75-100 animals living in squalid, inhumane conditions literally fighting for survival. This is not uncommon; rather, it is the world of a hoarder.
At the end of a long and arduous day, Kent Animal Shelter, assisted by several other organizations and rescue groups, recovered over 100 animals, many quivering in fear, cowering in corners, undernourished and suffering from a multitude of afflictions.
Animal collectors rarely notice that the animals are loosing weight or suffering from disease. People young and old from all walks of life and tax brackets can become "collectors." Overwhelmed and in denial about this mental malady, they continue to stockpile animals living in urine and feces often with dead animals underfoot. The animals suffer physically and mentally in an unnatural and inhumane environment sometimes for years. Generally, hoarders keep their living quarters "off limits" to outsiders for obvious reasons.
Pictured here are some of the victims of the rescue that are receiving medical care, nutrition and lots of love from the staff at the Kent Animal Shelter.
