The City of Key West will be hosting a very special visiting vessel next week as the Polynesian Voyaging Society's (PVS) voyaging canoe, The Hokule'a stops on its world travels at Mallory Dock. The vessel will arrive Tuesday and stay until Thursday. The canoe, along with its sister vessel, the Hikianalia, are traveling over 60,000 nautical miles around the earth with a message of sustainability. "We are sailing like our ancestors have for a thousand years-using wayfinding," the Society writes on their website that tracks the journey. "On board, there is no compass, sextant, or cellphone, watch, or GPS for direction. In wayfinding, the sun, moon, and stars are a map that surrounds the navigators. When clouds and storms make it impossible to see that map, wave patterns, currents, and animal behavior give a navigator directional clues to find tiny islands in the vast ocean."
"Our voyaging canoe strives to be a model of island sustainability and the importance of all types of knowledge and learning," says Maya Saffery of the PVS. We seek to share 'Island Wisdom, Ocean Connections, Global Lessons' both in Hawaiʻi and around Island Earth through our current Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage to care for Island Earth." Now on the Caribbean leg of its voyage, the vessel is en route to Cuba after its stay in Key West. Mayor Craig Cates said he is thrilled to welcome this unique vessel and the message its crew is spreading worldwide. "Everyone can be the navigator our earth needs," says the PVS. "Every person on earth can help navigate us to a healthy future where our Island Earth is safe and thriving again. Stories of hope and local solutions that blend indigenous wisdom with other best practices can be found all over the world. If we find and share those stories with each other, we can help chart a positive course for our planet." For more information on the voyage, visit
www.hokulea.com. The crew is checking in regularly, and there's a live tracking feature.

Chief Donie Lee, on behalf of the Love Fund, this week presented a formal "thank you" to the Westin Resort and Marina for its generosity to the Key West Police Department. Westin General Manager Diane Schmidt's continuous support for this important non-profit effort is unflagging.
For many years, the resort has hosted the Love Fund's biggest fundraiser of the year: the police officers' ball. Established in 2006, the Love Fund fills a special need and comes to the aid of any Department member when no other resources are available in times of extreme hardship. The KWPD Love Fund is a federally recognized charitable organization.

Rise and Settle
"Whatever thoughts and emotions arise in meditation, allow them to rise and settle, like the waves in the ocean. Whatever you find yourself thinking, let that thought rise and settle, without any constraint. Don't grasp at it, feed it, or indulge it, don't cling to it, and don't try to solidify it. Neither follow thoughts nor invite them; be like the ocean looking at its own waves, or the sky gazing down on the clouds that pass across it.
You will soon find that thoughts are like the wind; they come and go. The secret is not to "think" about the thoughts but to allow them to flow through your mind, while keeping your mind free of afterthoughts." - Rigpa Quote of the Day

NEW TENNESSEE WILLIAMS EXHIBIT OPENED AT CUSTOM HOUSE last week. Key West Art & Historical Society welcomed the public to the opening of its new Tennessee Williams gallery, a permanent installation on the 2
nd floor of the Custom House Museum. While most known as one of the 20
th century's most significant playwrights for works that include "A Streetcar Named Desire," "The Glass Menagerie," and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," Williams also took up oil painting as a form of relaxation while living in Key West. The new gallery will feature several of his paintings on permanent loan from philanthropist David Wolkowsky, one of Williams' closest personal friends; featured here is a portrait of Wolkowsky entitled "L'inconnu C'est les Yeux." "Several of the paintings have allusions to his writings, including illustrating characters from his plays, short stories and poems," says Society Curator Cori Convertito, PhD. The opening coincided with the Tennessee Williams Festival and The Society's Lunchtime Curator Session on Wednesday, March 16 featuring Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit Curator Dennis Beaver, who explored Williams' lasting impact on Key West and led guests on a VIP tour of the gallery after his talk. For more information call Cori Convertito at 295.6616 x 112 or visit

New Visitors Guides at the Lower Keys Chamber
The Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce has received its much-anticipated new Visitors Guides, which promote the area from the Seven Mile Bridge through Stock Island. The Guides, which are both beautiful and informative, drive potential customers to Chamber member businesses by giving them contact information in the alphabetical and the category sections. The Chamber mails thousands of these guides every year to visitors who request them via phone, email and chats through the TDC's site.
The Visitors Guide is available on the Lower Keys Chamber's website: www.lowerkeyschamber.com, as well as being accessible on mobile devices. It provides a comprehensive overview of the many natural attractions in the Lower Keys to entice visitors to spend some time relaxing and enjoying all there is to do here. The information contained in the Guide also addresses the many ecological concerns we have here, advising tourists not to feed the Key Deer, asking that they refrain from littering and advising them of the delicate ocean environment that surrounds us.
Anyone is welcome to pick up a new Visitors Guide at the Lower Keys Chamber & Visitors Center at 31020 Overseas Hwy in Big Pine Key, M-F 9am - 5pm or Sat., 9am- 3pm.
