June 2018 -- Kick Off Your Summer at PPL
AUTHOR TALK & SIGNING

Veteran journalist, former USA Today Editor-in-Chief
Joanne Lipman Coming to PPL!
Tuesday, June 19 | 6:30 - 8 pm
3rd Floor Meeting Room

Join us for a talk and book signing by Joanne Lipman, veteran journalist and former Editor-in-Chief of USA Today  on her new bestselling book, That’s What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) About Working Together

Lipman contends that to achieve parity in the office, women don’t have to change—men do—and in this inclusive and realistic handbook, she offers solutions to help professionals solve gender gap issues and achieve parity at work. While companies with more women in senior leadership perform better by virtually every financial measure, and women employees help boost creativity and can temper risky behavior like the financial gambles behind the 2008 economic collapse, 95 percent of Fortune 500 chief executives in the United States are men, and women hold only seventeen percent of seats on corporate boards. And while more men are reaching across the gender divide, genuinely trying to reinvent the culture and transform the way we work together, fumbles, missteps, frustration, and misunderstanding continue to inflict real and lasting damage on women’s careers. Filled with illuminating anecdotes, data from the most recent relevant studies, and stories from Lipman’s own journey to the top of a male-dominated industry,  That’s What She Said is a book about success that persuasively shows why empowering women as true equals is an essential goal for us all—and offers a roadmap for getting there.

Thanks to the Brown Bookstore, books will be available for sale and signing by the author.

FINAL DAYS! If you haven't seen HairBrained...there's still time! Get here by June 30!
On view in the Providence Journal Rhode Island Room, 1st Floor and on the 3rd Floor outside Special Collections during Library hours through June 30.

PPL's fourth annual Exhibition & Program series  HairBrained  is focused on hair. Specifically, the exhibition explores the ways in which hair defines and reflects culture, self-identity, agency and  politics. Hair is simultaneously frivolous and serious, personal and universal. It’s a means to communicate complex messages to everyone we encounter. In this exhibition, we focus on hairstyles around the world and throughout history via a selection of items from PPL’s Special Collections. Exhibition materials include books, prints, magazines, and photographs.
