ABOUT PIRATES OF PENZANCE

Over the next few months we will post info about PIRATES OF PENZANCE so some of you who have never seen it can learn a little about it in hopes you want to be in it or come and see it in November!!

"The Pirates of Penzance" is a rollicking - and let's be honest, silly - show. It's the kind of pirate musical Monty Python would have written if Monty Python had been around in 1879. Frederic, a young man who spent many years in apprenticeship with a not-too-threatening band of pirates led by The Pirate King . After turning 21, Frederic is ready to leave the ship, find a young wife and dedicate his life to thwarting piracy. Not sure why Frederic has it out for pirates since the ones he's spent his formative years with are such fun-loving and kindly fellows. It's hard to believe they could hurt a fly, and they wouldn't if it were an orphan fly.

On his own, Fred runs into a passel of young ladies who turn out to be the daughters of Mr. Stanley, who himself is the model of a modern major-general. Frederic quickly falls in love with Mabel, the Major-General's youngest daughter.

The pirates arrive and decide they want Stanley's daughters for their brides. Stanley diverts their plan by playing on the pirates' well-known weakness for orphans. When the truth comes out, including a surprising revelation about Frederic's birth, there will be much fighting and bloodshed. Well, mostly singing and dancing. It all comes to a completely ridiculous ending, which fits right in with the rest of the story.

"The Pirates of Penzance" is charming and a great deal of fun. The music is delightful and the wordplay is clever.

There are LOTS of roles for men, women of all ages and children over 10. More info coming soon.

We are producing a 90 minute non-musical comedy in the round from a script by Tony nominated writer Joseph Robinette (for Broadway's A Christmas Story - the musical). Of course we will add our own comedy touches to it.

Directed by Andrew Diskes

ABOUT THE PLAY: Two of literature's most unforgettable young ladies get mixed up together in a magical meeting that produces hilarious results as the audience becomes reacquainted with a cast of familiar characters and sees them in a new light: the Cowardly Lion, the White Rabbit, the Tin Man, the Mad Hatter, the Scarecrow, the Dormouse, the Queen and the Witch from those enduring classics The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. This fun-filled romp follows Alice and Dorothy and their coteries as they try to unscramble their stories with the help of a contemporary young lad who started the whole thing to begin with when he put off a book report until the very last minute. With script and lyrics by award-winning children's playwright Joseph Robinette.

Please let us know you are coming.

You can also sign up to be in the show without auditioning. You would be a Munchkin or Flying Monkey or a Flower or other character from Wonderland. Email us if you want to sign up without auditioning.

Neverland looking for rehearsal space on North Shore

Neverland is looking for occasional rehearsal space in case our usual spots are booked that day. We are looking for somewhere with a radius of about 8 miles from Beverly. We often do a trade of rehearsal space for a Neverland Corporate Sponshorship which includes an ad in our website, newsletter and program book. Please email Andy if interested at [email protected] .

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS OF THE NORTH SHORE

NEVERLAND has two new announcements!:

To kick off our 25th season we want to offer two of the following:

1. North Shore Residents age 65 and over can be in a show FREE OF ANY SHOW FEES. (If you don't want to be on stage you can be in our show choir which helps to support the cast on stage and you don't have to memorize the music.) We can also arrange for transportation. So if you love music and want to interact with people of all ages, you now don't have an excuse!

Studies show that people in Denmark are among the happiest in the world. One thing that people have in common is that almost everyone is part of some organization as a hobby.

2. We would like to bring our rehearsals to people who often cannot come to us. We would like to rehearse once a month at an area nursing home or assisted living facility (with an approx 8 mile radius from Beverly). We would need one larger room and a smaller room and residents can come and watch us rehearse and can even sing along with us. The cast and parents will interact with the residents and strike up a rapport. And during our rehearsal break I bet some cast members would love to sing for the residents. If any of those residents or staff wanted to come and see our actual performance, we would be happy to donate tickets. Andy Diskes was in Up with People for a year(along with Neverlander Bethany Vahn) and they often sang and interacted with people in nursing homes and it was very rewarding. If you have any thoughts, please let us know. You can reach Andy Diskes at [email protected] . We hold rehearsals on weekends and on weeknights.
