Girls on the Run Program

Denver Place Elementary is participating in Girls on the Run this spring!

They have 14 girls participating this year. 6 Staff members received training - Karen Long, Carrie Peelle, Alea Shope, Natalie Steinmetz, Courtney Caparso, and Leighanne Dyer. All of the coaches are sharing in the organization and leadership. 2 of the coaches are CPR trained, and there is a CPR trained coach at all meetings.

According to their website, "At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k event"

From one past participant, "Girls on the run is a fun program where all girls can be themselves and have fun. We also get to learn people skills that we can use when now and when we get older. We get fit and have fun and get a 5k at the end of the year."

The team will be participating in a Girls on the Run 5k in Cincinnati on May 12th!  They will set up a practice 5K in the Denver Place neighborhood at an upcoming meeting, on Monday, April 23rd. Everyone in the community is invited to come on the 23rd to encourage the girls in this event. Wish them luck and cheer them on if you see them running around the neighborhood getting ready for their big event.

Elementary Updates

WCSD Elementary principals are excited to share information with our students and families about the new grade level centers being formed for the start of the upcoming school year. The new grade level centers will include the following grades in the existing elementary buildings:

Holmes - Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Graders
Denver Place - 3rd and 4th Graders
East End - Preschool and 5th Graders

Jen Martin will be the principal at East End (PreK and 5). Karen Long will be the principal at Holmes Elementary (K, 1, 2). And Cortney Karshner-Rethmel, will be the principal at Denver Place (3, 4).

We are planning opportunities for you to visit your child(ren)'s new school at a Family Night in May. In addition, your child will have the opportunity to take a field trip in May to the grade level center that they will attend next year and have an opportunity to interact with their grade level peers. Students and families alike will have opportunities to meet their new teachers and classmates and tour their new grade level center. Specific dates and details about these exciting events will be shared with you soon.

There is a team of teachers, parents, and community members working closely with building and district leadership to plan a smooth transition to these new grade level center. Committees are working on the following aspects of the transition:
  • Moving
  • Transportation
  • Arrival and Dismissal
  • Student/Parent Transition
More information will be shared with you via our school website, Class Dojo, and the district newsletter. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to your building principal and ask!

Peers Helping Peers

What a great article about a terrific program at WHS!

Leaders Cindy Morris and Emily Schmetzer have worked hard with their team of educators and students to teach and implement ASD Strategies in Action - real-life, practical, evidence-based strategies to support, educate, and work with students on the autism spectrum.

We hope you'll take a minute to learn about our Peers Helping Peers program and how it is helping our students that are on the spectrum.

East End Preschool Receives a 5-Star Rating!

Congratulations to our East End Preschool team!  They've earned a 5-star rating for meeting the quality standards established by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the Ohio Department of Education.

Our preschool was developed in 1990 to serve children with a variety of special needs.  The current program model was adopted to include children with typical development in order to create a community of learners, one with an appropriate and enriching learning environment and experience for all.

The curriculum is guided by the Early Learning Content Standards provided by the Ohio Department of Education. The daily schedule provides for a combination of whole group, small group and individual instruction, as well as learning through center based activities. Children are given an opportunity to interact with peers and adults in the classroom, as well as motor time and outside play. The social curriculum is supported through the Responsive Classroom philosophy which fosters safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms.

Step Up To Quality recognizes and promotes programs that meet quality program standards that exceed preschool licensing and health/safety regulations.   Our preschool staff, over the last 2 years, has been working hard to gain extra certification to exceed state standards and licensing requirements to earn this 5 star rating.

Our team consisted of:
Jamie Bryant - teacher
Ciara McGee - teacher
Elexis Wiederhold - teacher
Sharon Clifton - speech pathologist
Emily Schmetzer - speech pathologist
Lindsey Callahan - psychologist
Cindy Miller - aide
Rhonda Shumaker - aide
Carol Ilg - aide
Jen Martin - Principal

In 2018 we also welcomed Tammy Gregory to our team as a new preschool aide.

We are fortunate to have a wonderful team of educators, specialists, and aides that create such an enriching learning environment for our youngest students.
