Kindness

Kindness is a "feel good" feeling, and giving can bring pleasure. Being kind costs nothing, but the wealth it creates is immeasurable.  It is not necessary to show kindness only to people you might pity. You can be kind to your family and friends as well.

You don't need to give to big charities to be kind. It is easy to make kindness a habit. Speaking politely is a kindness. Helping your kids with their homework, giving your time and attention to seniors and being a good listener are all small acts of kindness.
Being kind to yourself can help you to maintain peace of mind. It can enrich your mind, body, and soul. Read positive books and stay away from bad company. Give time for yourself and love yourself unconditionally.

I remember as a child my father telling me, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." This has stayed with me throughout my life. So let's start spreading more kindness in our homes and the community. It will make our world a kinder place to live.

Until Next Week,

Mary Reeves

Attention All Business Owners!

As part of the effort to pass e-fairness legislation in Congress, ICSC has been helping small businesses get their voices heard on the issue. During the August Congressional district work period, ICSC members and small business owners met with 14 key members of Congress in districts throughout the country to discuss H.R. 2775, the Remote Transactions Parity Act (RTPA).  Meeting participants explained the importance of this legislation in creating a level playing field for local retail by closing the online sales tax loophole.
ICSC has also launched a digital strategy to promote these businesses with members of Congress and over Twitter.  Over the last year, ICSC has gathered  quotes and  stories from businesses around the country.  Their profiles can be found on  efairness.org, and supporters are encouraged to help share their stories and recruit small business owners to participate in this initiative.

If you would like to learn more about how you can help, contact ICSC's Director of Legislative Outreach, Leslie Fox at  [email protected]  or 646-728-3665.

Local Non-Profit Spotlight: Blessed Sacrament Church

At midnight on Christmas Eve 1948, church bells rang out over Twentynine Palms to herald the first Mass celebrated in the beautiful new Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Parishioners, townspeople and visitors filled the church to overflowing, all responding to the call for both labor and finances toward the construction of the classic mission-style building located in view of the historic Oasis of Mara and the Joshua Tree National Monument.

Prior to this time, Masses were celebrated in a building at the corner of Joshua Way and Cholla Avenue. Soon after the arrival of the first pastor, Father O'Dowd, from Sligo Ireland, plans were in progress to build a church and rectory.

Groundbreaking took place on June 6, 1948. When Bishop Charles F. Buddy came to Twentynine Palms on February 12, 1949, for the dedication, he expressed amazement at what had transpired since his previous visit in 1943. He exclaimed, "A miracle in the desert!"

Father O'Dowd saw the need for a parochial school, and once again the round of dinners, bazaars and bake sales began. School buildings and a convent were completed in 1956. Four Sisters of Mercy, also from Sligo, were recruited to staff the school, which opened in the fall. It was with great sadness that the school was closed in 1972, but in 1984, it was reopened during Fr. Michael Sturn's tenure as parish priest.

In 1978 Blessed Sacrament became a member of the newly formed Diocese of San Bernardino.

Presently Blessed Sacrament's energies are concentrated on revitalizing the parish with special concern for its children and youth and renewal in liturgical study. A courtyard patio that spans the church and rectory are the latest additions to the church complex.

Blessed Sacrament Church will have a vendor booth at our upcoming Pioneer Days October 15th-18th. They will be selling lumpia, pancit, adobo chicken, tamales, puto flan and much more! Stop by for some delicious food made with love.

Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series

The 29 Palms Old Schoolhouse lecture on Friday, October 9 features author and historian Nick Clapp and his presentation "Old Magic: Lives of Desert Shamans".

For a thousand generations, desert shamans of the far West sought order in the stars and in the mysteries and wonder of their grand, if unforgiving landscape. When summoned, they doctored the stricken, be they stoic elders or frightened little children. They conjured rains. Taking leave of reality, they rode whirlwinds and soared in magical flight. They epitomized a Native American ability "to relate to the land in ways beyond a Western way of thinking."  They're gone now. But there remain telling accounts of how, day-to-day, they lived: how omens foretold a shaman's destiny, how he learned his craft, how he could exercise his power for both  good and evil. How a shaman could travel to the land of the dead and (hopefully) return.  Drawing on the lore of a dozen tribes, Old Magic conjures the year-to-year life of a shaman - a life of service to his people, a life fraught with torment and danger, a life often taking a man or woman to the edge of madness.

Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park and the Twentynine Palms Historical Society, this lecture is held at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 6760 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms, on Friday, October 9 at 7PM.  This lecture is open to the public and costs $5 per person at the door. Optional dinner with speaker at 5PM at the 29 Palms Inn, room is limited and attendees are responsible for their own meal.  If interested in dinner please RSVP to Kellie Stokes at 760-367-5535 or [email protected] before Wednesday, October 7th.
