The Opening Act

Club President, Chris Elsberg, called the meeting of Monday, June 6, to order.  Jonathan Turner was not able to attend, so we again sang Acapulco style under the graceful leadership of Virginia Jarrett.
The first order of business was to present the Zeller Award to Tom Hanson.  This Award is related to efforts made in serving the Kiwanis International Project Eliminate.
Julie Derrer gave an update on Birdies, and we still have a number of them flailing away in the coop.  Warnings of reinforcement by Gene Smith and his crew were passed on to the membership.
The next Interclub is one that you'll have missed on the evening of June 6 in Annawan.
President Chris explained that the kickoff for our First Day program would be tonight (again, June 6).
Kevin Peterson brought along his sign-up sheets for support at hole 4 at the Deere Classic.  Sign up and get your choice spots.
Joe Robb addressed the Division 17 golf outing at Hawthorne in Aledo.  This will occur July 20 and is sure to be a fun event.
In Fun and Fellowship, the $3 preliminary prize went to the Kartel in the name of Gary Miner, who enthusiastically accepted this stipend.  The $25 gift certificate for Bike & Hike went to Julie Derrer.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by our Rock Island Housing Authority representative, Gail Brooks.  Gail began by explaining that the Authority has now been in business for almost 79 years.  Its stated original purpose was to address substandard housing in the area and to provide sound new housing for the poor.  Gail went on to give some background to the organization and achievements of the organization, all very finely expressed by a film in which individuals who had been involved with public housing during their lives gave their testimonies.  Gail also passed on some statistical information.
